Role Overview

An opportunity is open for a motivated Structural Engineer to join the structures team in Stantec’s Hartford or New Haven branch. The selected professional will work on complex bridge and transportation structure projects across North America. This role suits someone who enjoys problem-solving, leadership, and technical depth while contributing to high-impact infrastructure work.

Core Responsibility Areas

Bridge Design and Analysis

The engineer oversees the design and preparation of contract documents for new bridge projects and the rehabilitation of existing structures. Load rating analysis of existing bridges forms a critical part of this role.

Technical Delivery

The position involves performing detailed design calculations, drawings, and structural details for bridge projects. The engineer also reviews shop drawings, third-party calculations, and technical submissions to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Team Leadership and Mentorship

Mentoring junior structural engineers is a key responsibility. The role includes monitoring performance, providing technical guidance, and supporting professional growth within the team.

Project Coordination and Quality Control

The engineer coordinates with design teams, conducts site visits to verify existing conditions, and responds to requests for information. Ensuring compliance with health, safety, security, and environmental standards remains essential throughout project delivery.

Client and Stakeholder Engagement

Regular coordination with clients helps ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. The role also supports staffing plans, budget tracking, and internal quality reviews.

Desired Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong leadership skills and a collaborative mindset. Clear communication, both written and verbal, is essential. The role requires confidence in decision-making and the ability to manage multiple technical priorities effectively.

Education and Experience Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering is required. A graduate degree is highly preferred. Candidates must have at least five years of experience in structural design and analysis of bridges or transportation structures.

A Professional Engineer license in the State of Connecticut is mandatory.

Technical Skills and Credentials

The engineer must demonstrate proficiency in structural analysis and design tools, including STAAD, CSI, SAP, and AASHTOWare BrR. Experience with AutoCAD and Open Bridge Modeler is required, including compliance with CTDOT Digital Design Environment standards.

A strong understanding of AASHTO, ASCE, AISC, and ACI design codes is expected.

Work Environment

The role primarily involves office-based work. Some field visits may be required depending on project needs. Responsibilities may evolve to meet business and project demands.
