About the Role
Automattic is hiring an Applied AI Engineer to help build AI-powered features across its product ecosystem. This remote position is designed for engineers who have already shipped AI functionality in real products and understand how to turn new technology into useful user experiences.
In this role, you will work on AI features that may support site creation, ecommerce, recommendations, messaging, creator tools, and other product areas. The focus is not only on experimenting with AI, but also on building reliable features that can scale across products used by millions of people.

Key Responsibilities
- Build and launch user-facing AI features across Automattic products.
- Develop AI-powered tools for areas such as publishing, ecommerce, messaging, and creator workflows.
- Turn prototypes into production-ready features that can support large user audiences.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers on practical AI product development.
- Work with teams across products such as WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Beeper, Pocket Casts, and related platforms.
- Evaluate new AI developments and identify opportunities to improve product experiences.
- Contribute to full-stack development using technologies such as PHP, TypeScript, and React.
- Help create scalable AI interfaces that are useful, reliable, and easy for users to understand.
- Support technical decision-making and product direction through strong engineering judgment.
Required Qualifications
- Experience shipping AI features or AI-powered products used by real users.
- Production experience working with large language models, AI APIs, or custom AI implementations.
- Strong full-stack engineering ability or deep expertise in a relevant technical area.
- Experience building scalable user-facing software products.
- Familiarity with technologies such as PHP, TypeScript, React, or similar development stacks.
- Ability to prototype quickly while maintaining long-term product quality.
- Strong product thinking and attention to user experience.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in distributed or hybrid teams.
- Good understanding of machine learning fundamentals and current AI development trends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building consumer AI products at significant scale.
- Background with WordPress, ecommerce platforms, messaging products, or creator tools.
- Open-source contributions or public technical work.
- Startup experience as a founder, early engineer, or high-impact product builder.
- Based in New York City or open to relocating, though remote applicants are also considered.
