Role Overview

Thomson Reuters is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, AI, to lead the design and development of AI-powered applications. The role focuses on building robust solutions using .NET, Azure AI Services, Azure OpenAI, and advanced frameworks such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and Semantic Kernel. The engineer will ensure end-to-end solution quality, including performance, security, and reliability, while mentoring and guiding engineers across teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop .NET services and APIs integrating Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Services.
  • Design and implement RAG pipelines using Azure AI Search for hybrid retrieval and grounding.
  • Build agentic workflows with planning, memory, function/tool calling, and safe execution boundaries.
  • Develop Semantic Kernel plugins and skills, configure planners, connectors, and memory stores.
  • Implement observability for AI systems, tracking cost, latency, token usage, and quality metrics.
  • Collaborate with product, security, and data teams to align AI solutions with compliance and business goals.
  • Lead design reviews, write RFCs, mentor engineers, and drive engineering excellence.

Required Candidate Portfolio

Required Skills

  • Advanced C#/.NET (7/8/9): Async programming, streaming, dependency injection, clean architecture, performance tuning.
  • ASP.NET Core: REST APIs, authentication/authorization (OAuth2/OIDC/JWT), caching, resiliency.
  • Azure AI Services: OpenAI GPT models, embeddings, function calling, streaming responses, and cost optimization.
  • Azure AI Search: Indexing, hybrid search, skillsets, enrichers, re-ranking.
  • RAG & Agentic AI: Chunking strategies, metadata enrichment, multi-tool orchestration, memory management, error recovery, guardrails.
  • Semantic Kernel (C#): Kernels, semantic/native skills, connectors, planners, memory stores.
  • Infrastructure: RabbitMQ, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes.
  • Security & Compliance: PII handling, data residency, auditability, threat modeling basics.
  • Testing & Quality: Unit/integration/contract tests, load tests, CI/CD (Azure DevOps/GitHub).

Preferred Skills

  • Azure Cognitive Services: Document Intelligence, Speech, Vision for multimodal AI.
  • Advanced Azure AI Search: Custom scoring, multi-source ingestion.
  • Observability for AI quality: Hallucination detection, RAG evaluation (RAGAS/rubrics).
  • Front-end integration: Blazor/Angular for streaming UX.
  • Knowledge graphs: Neo4j/RDF for advanced retrieval.

Compensation

  • United States: $127,400 – $236,600 USD annually, plus potential annual bonus.
  • Canada (Ontario): $148,800 – $198,800 CAD annually, plus potential annual bonus.
  • Base pay is determined by experience, knowledge, and internal equity. Total rewards include flexible benefits and well-being programs.
