Role Overview
Shell is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer to join the Trading and Supply business, specifically in the Crude and Products portfolio. This role blends hands-on technical leadership with architectural responsibilities, empowering the candidate to define standards, drive innovation, and deliver strategic, scalable solutions for the Trading Front Office. The position reports to the Crude and Products Delivery Manager and contributes to the Crude and Products Architecture Leadership Team.
Duties & Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Lead technical architecture and design decisions for software products in Commodities Trading.
- Create secure, scalable, and pragmatic technical solutions aligned with business objectives.
- Own end-to-end technical strategy and delivery for multiple projects and product teams.
- Apply frameworks like TOGAF and leverage enterprise architecture tooling.
Engineering & Team Management
- Lead software engineering teams, ensuring high performance, collaboration, and recruitment of talent.
- Direct workload allocation, task prioritization, and accountability for engineers and architects.
- Mentor and foster innovation within technical teams, balancing risk, complexity, and cost.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
- Partner with IT and business stakeholders to make strategic and operational technical decisions.
- Communicate complex technical concepts effectively across diverse teams.
- Participate actively in Shell’s wider technical communities.
Innovation & Problem Solving
- Diagnose complex issues and deliver innovative, implementable solutions.
- Manage dependencies, technical debt, and trade-offs while maximizing value.
Technical Mastery
- Architect and design ETRM services, ideally within Endur landscapes.
- Expertise in languages such as Node.js, .NET, Python, C++, and front-end frameworks like React.
- Hands-on experience with Azure, Cloud Native Platforms, Microservices, containers, and data pipelines.
- Proficient in SQL/NoSQL databases, Databricks/Spark, Azure Data Factory, and CI/CD tools like GitHub, VSTS, Terraform, and Ansible.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements (MiFID II, EMIR, FCA guidelines), market data providers, and the full exchange-traded derivatives lifecycle.
Candidate Background
Experience & Leadership
- 13+ years in software or architecture delivery, including 10+ years leading engineering teams.
- 5+ years in architectural leadership roles, guiding portfolios of projects.
- Demonstrated ability to build motivated, high-performing teams and foster collaboration.
Industry Knowledge
- Strong understanding of Commodity Trading & Price Risk Management, capital markets, or investment banking.
- Familiarity with front-office market analysis, trading data, risk, finance, and operations.
Education & Preferred Qualifications
- An advanced degree in a relevant technical or engineering discipline is preferred.
- TOGAF or a similar enterprise architecture certification is an advantage.
