Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join its Quantum Sensing and Computing Group within the Computational Science and Engineering Division. The role supports ongoing projects in quantum integrated photonics and contributes to the laboratory’s broader mission to advance scientific solutions to energy, environmental, and national security challenges.
Role Summary
The position centers on advancing research in quantum integrated photonics. The associate contributes to innovative sensing solutions, supports new technical developments, and collaborates across scientific teams to strengthen ORNL’s leadership in quantum technologies.

Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct research in quantum integrated photonics and contribute to new and continuing scientific efforts.
- Develop quantum sensing concepts for national research priorities and support steps toward practical implementation.
- Present research findings to national audiences through conferences, workshops, and seminars.
- Prepare peer-reviewed papers, technical documentation, and internal reports.
- Represent the laboratory in public scientific forums and uphold its core values of impact, integrity, teamwork, safety, and service.
- Support a collaborative and respectful environment that reflects ORNL’s commitment to equal opportunity.
Candidate Background
Required Education
A PhD in physics or a closely related discipline earned within the last five years.
Preferred Expertise
Candidates with experience in quantum optics and quantum information science receive priority consideration. Skills in designing, fabricating, and testing integrated photonic devices are highly valued. Strong communication abilities, independent research initiative, and effective collaboration in fast-paced environments are essential. The role requires eligibility to work with export-controlled technologies.
Appointment Details
Applicants must have completed their PhD no more than five years before applying and must meet all degree requirements before starting. The appointment runs for up to 24 months, with the possibility of an extension based on performance and funding availability.
