Position Overview
The Engineering Technician is responsible for performing testing, monitoring, and operational control of ship systems on naval vessels. This role ensures efficient project execution, evaluates technical processes, and provides advisory support to enhance operational performance.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ship Systems Oversight – Monitor and control the condition and operation of surface ships and submarines.
- Technical Problem Solving – Apply established procedures and innovative techniques to assess, resolve, and advise on complex technical issues.
- Project & Program Assessment – Evaluate effectiveness, develop criteria, and create procedural guidelines for specialized areas.
- Advisory Services – Provide recommendations and support to a broad range of stakeholders on engineering, operational, and programmatic matters.
Desired Candidate
- Education Requirements: Vary by grade level; a master’s degree may substitute for specialized experience at the GS-09 level.
- Experience Requirements:
- GS-08: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 in applying engineering procedures for ships/submarines.
- GS-09: One year equivalent to GS-08, analyzing technical procedures and recommending solutions.
- GS-10: One year equivalent to GS-09, evaluating procedures and operational problem-solving.
- GS-11: One year equivalent to GS-10, modifying procedures to resolve operational deficiencies.
- Skills & Competencies: Technical analysis, problem-solving, project evaluation, advisory services.
- Language Requirement: English proficiency required.
- Other Requirements: U.S. citizenship, suitability for federal employment, E-Verify participation, successful pre-appointment physical, and ability to obtain/maintain required security clearance.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Work may involve exposure to fumes, dust, heat, radiation, and chemicals.
- Personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes must be worn.
- Travel may include remote or isolated sites, both domestic and international, including military and commercial aircraft.
