The Opportunity
The Assistant Project Manager (APM) – Engineer joins the Project Management Office (PMO), a team responsible for overseeing all design, engineering, and construction projects that support this national monument. This full-time, on-site position offers a four-year contract and the chance to work at the intersection of culture, engineering, and innovation.
The APM will work closely with Project Managers to manage projects emphasizing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, supporting every stage—from concept to closeout—while ensuring quality, safety, and operational efficiency.

Core Responsibilities
1. Design Coordination and Technical Oversight
- Collaborate with end users, architects, and engineers to refine project requirements throughout design and construction phases.
- Develop scopes of work and evaluate RFPs for A/E firms.
- Review designs, specifications, and submittals for compliance and functionality.
- Manage A/E firm performance, meetings, and submission timelines.
- Support document management, project schedules, and administrative coordination.
2. Construction Management and Quality Control
- Oversee on-site construction activities to ensure adherence to contract specifications and safety standards.
- Monitor budgets, schedules, and construction changes.
- Coordinate reviews of contractor submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
- Facilitate project transitions, ensuring readiness for operational handover.
- Manage project closeout, including punch lists, warranties, and as-built documentation.
3. Reporting, Compliance, and Program Support
- Assist in preparing bi-monthly project reports for the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
- Maintain comprehensive records and ensure compliance with all federal and organizational policies.
- Contribute to PMO-wide initiatives, including process improvements and documentation standards.
The Ideal Candidate
Qualifications & Background
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or related field).
- 3–5+ years of experience managing design and construction projects from concept to completion.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) preferred.
- Expertise in hydronic systems, BAS, HVAC systems, and central plant operations.
- Familiarity with commissioning of MEP systems and multidisciplinary design integration.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Additional Requirements
- Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the DMV area (no relocation assistance provided).
- On-site presence required.
Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted within the Kennedy Center facilities but may extend to active construction sites, requiring adherence to safety protocols and the use of protective gear. Physical activity such as bending, climbing, and lifting materials to 25 pounds is occasionally needed. The environment may alternate between standard office settings and areas with elevated noise or exposure to mechanical systems.
