About the Role

Kuna is seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Specialist to support environmental monitoring, regulatory compliance, and construction oversight activities at Red Dog Mine, one of Alaska’s largest mining operations.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring construction and operational activities comply with environmental permits, regulatory commitments, and environmental protection standards. During the initial phase of the assignment, the role will focus on road construction monitoring and compliance activities. Future project work may include water treatment, discharge management, and environmental compliance programs supporting mine operations.

The successful candidate will work directly with construction managers, environmental teams, and project stakeholders to help protect sensitive environmental resources while supporting safe and successful project execution.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance & Monitoring

  • Conduct environmental inspections and field compliance assessments
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Verify environmental protection measures are properly implemented
  • Collect and document environmental monitoring data
  • Support permit compliance and environmental reporting requirements

Construction Environmental Oversight

  • Work closely with project managers and construction teams
  • Monitor environmental conditions in active construction areas
  • Ensure environmental controls remain effective throughout project activities
  • Identify potential compliance risks and recommend corrective actions
  • Support implementation of environmental management plans

Field Inspections & Auditing

  • Perform routine environmental audits and site inspections
  • Evaluate erosion control, sediment management, and water protection measures
  • Monitor environmentally sensitive areas and protected resources
  • Review field activities against project requirements and commitments
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and compliance documentation

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Serve as a liaison between environmental and construction teams
  • Communicate environmental concerns and recommendations clearly
  • Coordinate with technical specialists and subject matter experts
  • Support regulatory compliance discussions and reporting efforts
  • Assist with issue resolution and environmental planning

Risk Management & Environmental Protection

  • Identify environmental risks before they become compliance issues
  • Develop practical mitigation recommendations
  • Support implementation of best management practices
  • Protect wetlands, waterways, wildlife habitats, and cultural resources
  • Exercise stop-work authority when necessary to prevent environmental harm

Skills & Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Environmental Management, or a related field
  • Minimum 3–5 years of environmental compliance or environmental monitoring experience
  • Experience supporting construction, infrastructure, mining, or resource development projects
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, permits, and compliance requirements
  • Strong technical reporting and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently in remote field environments
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Experience conducting field inspections and environmental assessments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in mining or road construction projects
  • Knowledge of Alaska environmental regulations and permitting requirements
  • Experience with stormwater management and environmental monitoring programs
  • Familiarity with erosion and sediment control practices
  • Experience with water quality monitoring and sampling
  • Knowledge of Arctic ecosystems, wildlife, and vegetation management
  • Experience working in remote or rotational work environments
  • Familiarity with environmental auditing and compliance systems
