About the Role
The Fusion Engineering Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Vacuum Technician to support the Material Plasma Exposure Experiment (MPEX) and other DOE Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) projects.
Key Responsibilities:
✔ Assemble, modify, and maintain precision electro-mechanical vacuum systems
✔ Install, test, commission, and operate high & ultra-high vacuum systems
✔ Conduct performance verification using leak detectors, residual gas analyzers (RGAs), and other diagnostic tools
✔ Develop and document procedures for fabrication, testing, and operation
✔ Maintain detailed records of assembly, testing, and procurement data
✔ Ensure compliance with ORNL safety protocols and ethical standards
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
✅ AS degree in mechanical technology (or related field) OR 7+ years of experience in vacuum/mechanical systems
✅ Hands-on experience with vacuum components, instrumentation, and troubleshooting
✅ Proficiency in CAD systems for interpreting design drawings
✅ Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Skills:
🔹 Knowledge of electrical power systems & computer-based controls
🔹 Experience with vacuum system assembly & maintenance
🔹 Ability to work independently & in a team
