Head of AI Engineering and Enterprise Enablement

Tebra is hiring a hands-on Head of AI Engineering and Enterprise Enablement to lead the company’s internal artificial intelligence strategy, engineering, workflow redesign, and organizational adoption. This remote U.S. position combines executive-level partnership, production engineering, process re-engineering, governance, and small-team leadership.

The role is focused on improving how Tebra operates internally rather than developing AI features for its customer-facing products. You will build production systems alongside a small engineering team while working with functional leaders to identify opportunities where AI can improve efficiency, strengthen operating leverage, and reduce the need for organizational growth to depend directly on headcount expansion.

Job Overview

This position is structured as a hands-on player-coach role. You will lead a team of approximately one to two engineers while continuing to write code, design agents, build integrations, re-engineer workflows, and deploy production systems yourself.

You will work with the CEO, CFO, CPO, and leaders across the business to determine where AI can create the greatest operational impact. The role requires strong engineering depth, applied AI expertise, business judgment, change leadership, and the ability to translate complex operational problems into secure and scalable technical solutions.

Tebra has a strong preference for candidates located on the West Coast or working within the Pacific Time Zone.

AI Strategy and Opportunity Development

  • Partner with the CEO, CFO, and CPO to identify the operational areas where AI can create the greatest efficiency and operating leverage.
  • Prioritize AI initiatives according to return on investment, feasibility, and strategic importance.
  • Audit existing business processes before automating them.
  • Redesign inefficient workflows so automation improves the underlying work rather than only accelerating an ineffective process.
  • Create and maintain an AI opportunity roadmap in partnership with functional leaders.
  • Conduct detailed assessments across operating teams to identify high-impact efficiency opportunities.
  • Translate business problems into practical automation, agent, integration, or process-reengineering initiatives.

Engineering and Workflow Development

  • Design and build high-value internal AI agents and workflow automations.
  • Remain directly involved in engineering instead of only assigning work or reviewing team output.
  • Own shared technical patterns for retrieval, agent architecture, and secure connectivity with systems of record.
  • Develop MCP servers, agent-to-agent orchestration, API integrations, and permission-aware access patterns.
  • Connect AI workflows with platforms including Gong, Salesforce, NetSuite, Snowflake, Slack, and Workato.
  • Design multi-agent systems in which specialized agents transfer work across different stages of a workflow.
  • Build and maintain an organizational context layer that makes company knowledge and operating systems more accessible and queryable.
  • Develop meeting-capture systems, knowledge connectors, retrieval services, and secure access to internal data.
  • Create a reusable library of AI skills, frameworks, guidance, and implementation patterns.
  • Scale successful workflows so improvements developed for one employee or department can be reused across the organization.
  • Own the full development lifecycle from rapid prototype through production deployment.
  • Implement monitoring, evaluation frameworks, error handling, and ongoing improvements based on real usage data.

AI Governance and Security

  • Define approved AI tools and enterprise data-handling requirements.
  • Create build standards and a shared reference architecture for AI used across Tebra’s operating functions.
  • Partner with Legal and Security teams on governance, privacy, and deployment requirements.
  • Establish standards for how production agents are released, monitored, and maintained.
  • Ensure AI systems comply with HIPAA requirements and Tebra’s privacy and security policies for protected health information.
  • Maintain appropriate safeguards without creating unnecessary barriers for internal teams.
  • Create and maintain an AI risk register.
  • Develop acceptable-use policies for artificial intelligence.
  • Establish audit-trail requirements for production agents.
  • Update governance practices as AI tools, models, and technical risks evolve.

Organizational Enablement

  • Partner with functional teams to identify practical AI opportunities within their workflows.
  • Help departments build and deploy more routine or accessible AI agents independently.
  • Coach designated AI owners across business functions.
  • Develop enablement and fluency programs that expand AI adoption beyond the central engineering team.
  • Create practical entry points for less-technical employees.
  • Develop role-specific training, prompt libraries, templates, office hours, and ready-to-use resources.
  • Help employees understand how to use AI responsibly and effectively in their daily work.
  • Evaluate emerging AI tools, models, methodologies, and agent frameworks.
  • Recommend new technologies and practices that can improve Tebra’s operating capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 96 months of experience in software engineering, applied artificial intelligence, technical product development, or a closely related field.
  • Meaningful hands-on experience building and deploying production systems.
  • Current ability to read, write, and ship production-quality code.
  • Deep applied AI experience involving multi-agent systems.
  • Experience designing and deploying retrieval-augmented generation pipelines.
  • Experience with agent-to-agent orchestration.
  • Experience developing MCP servers.
  • Experience integrating APIs with systems of record.
  • Experience deploying production LLM-based workflows.
  • Hands-on experience implementing AI in a HIPAA-regulated or similarly controlled environment.
  • Experience working within business associate agreements.
  • Knowledge of audit-trail requirements and methods for protecting PHI from unauthorized or non-covered tools.
  • Experience delivering workflow automation, systems integration, or internal tooling that materially changed business operations.
  • Strong business judgment and the ability to understand complex departmental workflows.
  • Ability to determine when a process should be redesigned before it is automated.
  • Experience leading a small technical team while remaining personally involved in engineering delivery.
  • Excellent communication skills across executive, business, and engineering audiences.

Compensation

The stated Zone 1 annual base salary range for this position is $224,000 to $325,000.

Specific compensation will depend on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, role requirements, and geographic pay zone. Tebra uses four geographic compensation zones covering national-average, moderately higher-cost, high-cost, and lower-cost regions.

Eligible employees may also receive variable compensation and a broader benefits package. Compensation applicable to a candidate’s specific geographic zone will be discussed during the initial talent screening process.
