Role Summary

The Distribution Technician plays a key role in the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of FortisBC’s gas distribution systems. This position requires a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and technical skill in underground utilities and pipefitting. The successful candidate will undergo internal training and field coaching to ensure competency in all operational aspects of gas system management.

What You’ll Do

  • Participate in structured training programs and field coaching sessions to build technical competence.
  • Safely install, operate, and maintain FortisBC gas distribution assets.
  • Conduct equipment inspections and repairs in accordance with safety regulations and company standards.
  • Respond to gas emergencies and coordinate with first responders, contractors, and internal teams to ensure public safety.
  • Support the company’s commitment to strong community and customer relationships through professionalism and collaboration.

Candidate Profile

Experience:

At least two years of hands-on experience in pipefitting or underground utility work. Experience in gas system operations is preferred.

Education and Licensing:

  • High school diploma.
  • Gas B ticket (mandatory).
  • Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract.

Core Competencies:

  • In-depth understanding of gas installation systems, materials, and equipment.
  • Strong ability to learn, adapt, and apply technical knowledge in field settings.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills when dealing with customers and coworkers.
  • Proven ability to remain composed and make sound decisions during emergencies.

Work Conditions

  • This position entails standby and on-call duties, as well as overtime and travel requirements, which are determined by operational needs.
  • Adherence to residency requirements and WCB clean-shaven standards is mandatory.
  • Posting availability is limited to employees within the Courtenay district (as per article 8.02.2.2).
