Power Studies Engineer – PSCAD & Mission-Critical Data Centers

Ehvert Mission Critical, a business unit within Salas O’Brien, is seeking an experienced Power Studies Engineer to support the analysis and design of complex electrical power systems for hyperscale and AI data center projects across the United States.

This is a full-time remote position focused on advanced power system modeling, reliability, resiliency, utility coordination, and electrical studies for mission-critical facilities where uptime and system performance are essential.

Job Overview

As a Power Studies Engineer, you will evaluate electrical system behavior under normal and abnormal operating conditions using advanced modeling and simulation tools. You will work closely with electrical engineering teams, utilities, clients, consultants, and other project stakeholders to develop reliable power-system solutions for high-density data centers and other mission-critical infrastructure.

The role includes electromagnetic transient analysis, short-circuit and coordination studies, arc-flash analysis, harmonic studies, grounding, utility interconnections, and system reliability assessments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform power system studies including load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, grounding, power quality, harmonic analysis, transient analysis, and reliability studies.
  • Develop and maintain electrical system models using PSCAD, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar analysis platforms.
  • Perform electromagnetic transient studies to evaluate system behavior during faults, switching events, utility disturbances, and significant load changes.
  • Analyze high-density AI workloads and other mission-critical loads across utility, emergency generator, and facility electrical systems.
  • Support utility interconnection studies and coordinate with utility providers regarding service requirements and system performance.
  • Evaluate system reliability, redundancy strategies, contingency scenarios, and electrical resiliency.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, study documentation, findings, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with electrical design teams working on medium-voltage systems, substations, standby generation, UPS systems, mechanical electrical loads, and utility infrastructure.
  • Participate in technical and design coordination meetings with clients, consultants, utilities, and project stakeholders.
  • Support commissioning activities and provide technical guidance during project execution.
  • Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy and compliance with applicable standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • 96–180 months of experience in power systems engineering, utility engineering, substations, transmission and distribution, industrial facilities, renewable energy, or mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Required experience performing power system studies involving transient, harmonic, and grounding analysis.
  • Required proficiency with PSCAD.
  • Experience with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PowerFactory, CYME, or comparable power system analysis software.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical power systems, utility infrastructure, substations, protective relaying, and system reliability.
  • Experience working with utility interconnections and medium-voltage electrical systems.
  • Strong understanding of applicable NEC, IEEE 519, IEEE 3000 series, IEEE transformer and switchgear standards, NFPA, NESC, and utility requirements.
  • Strong technical writing, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to explain study results, technical findings, and recommendations clearly to clients.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer license.
  • Additional relevant professional certifications.
  • Experience supporting data centers, utilities, industrial facilities, or other large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Experience performing underground ductbank ampacity and heat studies using Neher-McGrath methodology.
  • Experience with short-circuit, load-flow, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies.

Work Arrangement

This is a full-time remote position available within the United States. Travel is required according to project needs.
