Samsung Unfolds Triple-Screen Phone as Tech War Intensifies

South Korean giant launches revolutionary three-screen smartphone as Chinese rivals close in and Apple looms.

SEOUL — The smartphone world just folded in a new direction. Samsung Electronics unveiled its boldest innovation yet, the Galaxy Z TriFold. This groundbreaking device features three separate panels that unfold into an expansive 10-inch screen.

Samsung aims to solidify its leadership in the foldable phone segment, and intense competition from agile Chinese manufacturers is mounting. Furthermore, industry analysts expect Apple to enter the foldable market soon.

The Galaxy Z TriFold will first go on sale in South Korea on December 12. A global rollout will follow in key markets like China and Singapore. American consumers, however, must wait until early 2026 to purchase the device.

A Pocketable Powerhouse

Samsung’s engineering marvel transforms from a compact phone into a tablet-sized display. When fully opened, the screen measures a formidable 10 inches. That size is nearly the same as a standard iPad; folded, the device is just over half an inch thick.

Powering this innovation are two intricate inward-folding hinges that enable the phone to run three applications simultaneously. Each app gets its own vertical screen section. The setup creates a seamless desktop-style experience without an external monitor.

Moreover, the company packed its largest-ever foldable phone battery inside the TriFold. It supports rapid charging, and the battery can reach 50% in 30 minutes.

A Strategic Play, Not a Volume Driver

Industry experts view this launch as a strategic showcase. Samsung does not expect to sell massive quantities immediately. The initial production volume will be intentionally limited.

“With competitive dynamics set to shift materially in 2026, especially with Apple’s expected entry, Samsung is positioning this device as a multi-fold pilot to reinforce its technology leadership,” said Liz Lee of Counterpoint Research. The analysis firm suggests the primary goals are to test durability and gather user feedback before a wider release.

The device carries a premium price tag. In South Korea, it will cost approximately 3.6 million won. That translates to roughly $2,450 for a single model with extensive memory and storage.

The Battle of the Bends Intensifies

Samsung pioneered the modern foldable phone market in 2019. Yet the segment remains niche, accounting for a small share of the smartphone market.

On the other hand, Chinese brands have aggressively entered this space, competing fiercely on both price and innovative form factors. Huawei, for instance, already launched its own second-generation tri-fold phone in September. Another Chinese brand, Honor, is now pushing its foldable devices into international markets. Honor separated from Huawei to navigate U.S. trade restrictions.

The Galaxy Z TriFold represents Samsung’s most direct counterpunch, as TM Roh, the company’s co-CEO, called the phone the result of years of research. He stated that it aims to optimize the balance between portability and productivity.

As the foldable race accelerates, all eyes are now on consumers, but the market will decide whether three screens are the next logical step or if this ambitious design is a bridge too far.
