Business Development Manager – Proteomics

Covaris, a PerkinElmer company, is hiring a Business Development Manager for Proteomics to expand adoption of its scientific workflows, instruments, consumables, and reagents across the United States. This full-time remote role is listed in Sacramento, California and requires extensive nationwide travel.

The position combines scientific expertise, customer engagement, market development, and commercial strategy. You will work with prospective and existing customers to identify technical needs, support workflow evaluation, and help convert scientific opportunities into long-term business relationships.

Job Overview

As Business Development Manager, you will develop new markets for Covaris proteomics solutions and support customers throughout evaluation and implementation. You will use your scientific background to understand complex protein-analysis requirements, position suitable workflows, and provide technical guidance to clinical, academic, and biopharmaceutical organizations.

The primary focus is building a strong opportunity pipeline and partnering with sales and commercial teams to convert qualified prospects into customers. You will also contribute feedback that supports the development and refinement of future products, workflows, and system standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee a business development strategy focused on market growth and positive customer outcomes.
  • Research the proteomics and life sciences market to identify emerging opportunities and customer needs.
  • Use scientific and technical knowledge to develop relevant solutions for prospective customers.
  • Position, customize, and promote Covaris workflows and products for specific research and commercial applications.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with prospective and existing customers.
  • Apply technical knowledge and market intelligence to strengthen the sales pipeline and support revenue growth.
  • Monitor customer engagement, opportunity progression, and sales activity against company goals.
  • Work closely with commercial teams to help convert leads into active customers.
  • Support sales professionals through technical guidance, coaching, and product training.
  • Participate in collaborative business meetings and provide updates to key stakeholders.
  • Provide clear and constructive feedback to commercial team members.
  • Respond to important customer questions regarding products, workflows, and scientific applications.
  • Support customer evaluation and implementation of customized proteomics workflows.
  • Provide occasional operator training when needed.
  • Contribute market and customer insights to the development of next-generation products and workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in a life sciences discipline.
  • Strong demonstrated expertise in proteomics, including biomarker development or biomarker program management.
  • At least 60 months of experience in protein analysis within academic and industrial environments.
  • At least 24 months of experience in business development, sales, or another customer-facing role.
  • Experience engaging customers directly in one-to-one technical or commercial discussions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver scientific presentations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to build enthusiasm and confidence among prospective customers.
  • Strong understanding of customer engagement, sales processes, and commercial opportunity development.
  • Ability to travel up to 75% across the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and managing biomarker programs.
  • Knowledge of biomarker identification, execution, and monitoring strategies.
  • Professional experience in the biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience in a technical role involving regular communication with senior stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of protein-analysis detection technologies, including top-down and bottom-up proteomics.
  • Basic bioinformatics skills.
  • Experience with analytical instruments, consumables, and reagents used in high-throughput workflows.
  • Familiarity with marketing, product management, and scientific sales processes.

Work Arrangement

Compensation

The annual base salary range for this position is $150,000 to $160,000.

Final compensation will depend on factors including work location, internal equity, relevant education, training, professional experience, and job-related skills.
