Position Overview

The Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (Title 32) maintains, repairs, and overhauls a wide range of heavy mobile and special-purpose vehicles. This includes fuel trucks, crash/structural firefighting vehicles, snow removal equipment, tactical vehicles, and earthmoving machinery. The role is essential to ensuring operational reliability and mission readiness of National Guard equipment.

Core Responsibilities

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul heavy mobile equipment and special-purpose vehicles.
  • Repair major systems, including diesel, gasoline, multi-fuel, turbine, and hybrid engines.
  • Perform body repair, corrosion control, refinishing, and repainting.

Technical Diagnostics & Modifications

  • Utilize diagnostic, scanning, and computer-controlled testing equipment to identify malfunctions.
  • Develop repair methods or fabricate modifications when standard procedures are unavailable.
  • Conduct welding, refinishing, and structural modifications as required.

Operational Testing & Documentation

  • Conduct operational driving tests to verify serviceability.
  • Maintain accurate records for training, repair, and maintenance.
  • Interpret technical manuals, maintenance orders, and local directives for repair guidance.

Shop & Inventory Management

  • Operate and maintain shop tools and specialized equipment.
  • Manage inventory of parts, materials, and maintenance resources to support operations.

Other Responsibilities

  • Travel occasionally to support operational requirements.
  • Maintain readiness for irregular or overtime work as needed.

Perfect Candidate 

Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience or training in repairing heavy mobile equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair engines, transmissions, fuel systems, and electronic components.
  • Familiarity with welding, refinishing, and structural vehicle maintenance.

Military Requirement

  • Membership in the Illinois National Guard is required before placement.
  • Enlisted ranks only, not exceeding TSgt.
  • Must comply with uniform requirements and security protocols.

Education

  • No formal education substitution is permitted; experience alone qualifies.

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Males must be registered under the Military Selective Service Act if born after December 31, 1959.
