Elon Musk’s X platform has launched a significant new feature that provides unprecedented visibility into user identities, and the “About This Account” tool is now rolling out globally to user profiles. The feature displays critical information, including an account’s geographical origin, its original join date, and the history of username changes.
The New Era of Profile Transparency
X is fundamentally shifting the dynamic of trust on its platform. For years, malicious bots and state-backed actors have flourished, often masquerading as genuine users to spread divisive narratives or misinformation. However, the introduction of the ‘About This Account’ section directly addresses this ongoing crisis.
By tapping on the ‘Joined’ date on any user profile, a detailed breakdown appears. It includes the account creation date, the total number of username modifications, and even the source platform, such as the specific App Store or Google Play region used for the download, empowering everyday users to instantly assess a profile’s credibility before engaging with its content.

Now, users can choose to show their specific country or opt for a broader geographical region or continent. This flexibility allows for a balance between transparency and security. Future Anti-Evasion Measures
The crackdown on anonymity may intensify further, as code-level analysis of the X application suggests the company is actively developing an anti-evasion layer. Reports indicate a potential future feature that would automatically flag an account using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to obscure its proper location. If this is implemented, a warning may appear on the user’s profile, alerting others that the displayed “country or region may not be accurate.”
