Position Summary

The Supervisory Computer Assisted Ordering Technician oversees personnel responsible for Computer Assisted Ordering (CAO) operations within the commissary. The position plays a central role in maintaining the overall CAO system and item data to ensure optimal stock levels and product availability across the commissary.

By maintaining systems accurately and overseeing inventory, the incumbent ensures customer demand is consistently met while minimizing excess or insufficient stock. Specific duties may vary depending on individual store requirements and management priorities.

Key Responsibilities

CAO System Management

The incumbent maintains the Computer-Assisted Ordering system by ensuring that data remains accurate and up to date. This includes adjusting calculated orders to maintain appropriate inventory levels and prevent shortages or overstock.

The role requires monitoring Balance on Hand data, reviewing sales history reports, and correcting discrepancies between system records and physical inventory.

Inventory Control and Auditing

The technician performs daily audits of not-in-stock items and overwrites items. Inventory levels across all CAO categories are physically reviewed in storage areas, display shelves, shippers, and warehouses.

Using radio-frequency handheld terminals, the incumbent gathers and updates inventory data while maintaining perpetual inventory records and auditing credits.

Vendor and Management Coordination

The position interfaces regularly with store management, commercial distributors, and vendor representatives to resolve stocking, shipping, and ordering issues. Coordination with contract stockers ensures merchandise availability and proper replenishment.

Supervision and Team Leadership

As a supervisory role, the incumbent plans and assigns work, sets priorities, prepares work schedules, and provides on-the-job training. The position ensures that CAO technicians perform duties efficiently and in compliance with agency standards.

Eligibility and Employment Conditions

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals and meet minimum age requirements. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with the Selective Service or exempt from it.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience

Candidates must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level. This experience must reflect knowledge of:

  • Retail food merchandising principles and store management practices
  • Commercial retail food store items and equipment
  • Monitoring and adjusting CAO system orders
  • Researching discrepancies between automated systems and physical inventory
  • Operating handheld inventory terminals
  • Reviewing and updating Balance on Hand and sales history data
  • Coordinating stocking with vendors and contract stockers

Experience may be gained in federal service, the private sector, or military service.

Education (If Applicable)

Applicants may qualify based on graduate-level education in business administration, public administration, agricultural economics, or related fields. Superior academic achievement may also be considered where applicable.

If education is required, transcripts must be provided. Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency and submitted with proper documentation.

Physical Requirements

The position requires significant physical activity, including prolonged standing, bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching. The incumbent must be able to:

  • Lift and handle items up to 40 pounds independently
  • Lift items over 40 pounds with assistance
  • Work in freeze and chill environments
  • Wear required protective clothing

Evaluation Process

Compensation and Additional Information

Upon first appointment to a federal civilian position, individuals are typically appointed at Step 1 of the selected grade.
