The Mission
As part of the correctional education team, the Special Education Teacher contributes to maintaining a humane and secure environment while addressing the academic and personal development needs of inmates with special learning challenges.
Core Responsibilities
Instruction & Program Development
- Design, plan, and deliver individualized and group lessons in remedial reading, math, and language arts.
- Develop and adapt educational materials to meet diverse learning abilities and needs.
- Conduct specialized classes focused on social adjustment and academic improvement.
Assessment & Individualized Support
- Identify, assess, and document students’ special learning needs through formal and informal testing.
- Create tailored educational programs based on assessment data and observed progress.
- Maintain accurate student records to track progress and refine teaching approaches.
Institutional Collaboration
- Work closely with correctional staff to maintain institutional security while promoting educational success.
- Support Bureau of Prisons initiatives to advance rehabilitation and reentry readiness.

The ideal candidate demonstrates empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of differentiated instruction. They are adept at motivating adult learners, skilled in designing inclusive learning environments, and committed to evidence-based teaching methods.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree with supervised student teaching, plus coursework in psychology, human development, philosophy, or history of education, and teaching methodology.
- Minimum of 24 semester hours in special education, including instruction for exceptional students.
Additional Qualification Options:
- GL-09 Level: Two years of graduate study leading to a Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience teaching students with special needs.
- GS-11 Level: Three years of graduate study toward a Ph.D. or equivalent specialized experience designing and implementing advanced special education programs.
- Combination of Education & Experience: Accepted if it equates to the required level of competency.

Training & Evaluation
Selected candidates must complete:
- The Core Value Assessment (CVA) at a Bureau of Prisons HR office.
- A three-week “Introduction to Correctional Techniques” program in Glynco, Georgia.
- A one-year probationary period, after which continued employment will depend on performance and public service alignment.
Additional Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
- Selective Service Registration (for applicable candidates).
- Must pass background investigation, physical exam, drug test, and NCIC/credit checks.
- Age restrictions apply (maximum entry age of 36, with certain exceptions for veterans).
