Data Scientist – Algorithms, Community Support (US Remote)

Airbnb is hiring a Data Scientist with LLM and machine learning expertise to join its Community Support Data Science team. This US remote-eligible role focuses on developing AI-powered solutions that improve support experiences for Airbnb hosts and guests.

You will work closely with engineers, product managers, designers, operations teams, and analytics partners to build and deploy machine learning and large language model solutions for personalization, customer issue understanding, evaluation, and operational optimization.

As a Data Scientist working on Algorithms within Community Support, you will help develop and deploy LLM and machine learning models that support personalized customer experiences, automated evaluation, synthetic data generation, issue understanding, and business optimization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify high-impact business opportunities through data exploration and model prototyping.
  • Translate business problems into scientific and machine learning formulations.
  • Analyze structured and unstructured data to uncover insights and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Build and deploy production LLM and machine learning models that contribute directly to data-driven products.
  • Use AI tools to improve development efficiency and product impact.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Engineering, Operations, and Analytics teams.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to leaders and stakeholders.
  • Help scale and evolve data science capabilities within the Community Support domain.

LLM & Machine Learning Focus

  • Implement advanced techniques to automate LLM evaluation with high efficiency and quality.
  • Scale the curation of high-quality synthetic datasets across Community Support domains for training and evaluating LLMs.
  • Build LLM and machine learning models that understand customer issues using diverse datasets.
  • Identify failure modes and opportunities for model and product improvement.
  • Build personalization models designed to provide differentiated experiences and maximize business impact.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience, such as data scientist, machine learning scientist, tech lead, junior faculty, or comparable experience.
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field.
  • State-of-the-art knowledge of AI and machine learning models.
  • Strong fluency in Python or R and SQL.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with audiences at different technical levels.
  • Ability to translate complex findings and results into compelling, actionable narratives.
  • Strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Product-oriented mindset with the ability to apply conceptual and innovative thinking to solutions that consider the user experience.

Additional Skills

  • Observational causal inference skills are considered a plus.
  • Experience applying machine learning and AI methods to scalable product or operational problems is relevant to the role.

Remote Work & Location Requirements

This position is remote eligible within the United States. Candidates must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

The role may occasionally require work from an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites when agreed upon with the employee’s manager. Airbnb states that its list of excluded states can change over time, so applicants should review current eligibility when applying.

Compensation

The base pay range for this role is $151,000–$175,000 USD per year. Airbnb states that actual base pay depends on factors including training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and market demands.

The position may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
