Staff Design Engineer – AI-Native Design Systems (US Remote)

Mixpanel is hiring a Staff Design Engineer to help transform its design system into foundational infrastructure for an AI-native product-development environment. This is a remote U.S. role for an experienced design engineer who can operate fluently across product design, frontend engineering, prototyping, design systems, and AI-assisted workflows.

You will work inside the design organization while shipping production code, building systems that connect design and engineering, improving AI-assisted prototyping workflows, and helping define how Mixpanel’s product should look and behave as interfaces become increasingly conversational, agentic, and adaptive.

Job Overview

Company: Mixpanel

Work Arrangement: Remote

Location: United States; San Francisco also listed

Experience Level: Staff

Experience: 8+ years

Compensation: $236,000–$300,000 USD TTCC

Equity: Eligible for equity consideration

The Staff Design Engineer will lead the evolution of Mixpanel’s design system, encode design standards directly into code and tooling, build AI-enabled prototyping infrastructure, connect design and production engineering workflows, and set a high craft standard across the product organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate Mixpanel’s design standards, principles, and visual craft into systems that live directly in production code.
  • Build and evolve a token system.
  • Build and maintain a component library.
  • Create design-system documentation and implementation guidelines.
  • Develop foundations that AI agents, AI coding tools, and AI prototyping workflows can reliably use.
  • Evolve the design system from a component library into broader infrastructure for AI-assisted product development.
  • Collaborate with the product design team on reimagining Mixpanel for conversational, agentic, and adaptive interfaces.
  • Use both design judgment and production engineering skills to bring AI product concepts into working software.
  • Build systems that connect design artifacts and production code.
  • Help keep design and code synchronized as product development becomes increasingly AI-assisted.
  • Define what production-ready or “shippable” UI should look like in an AI-heavy engineering environment.
  • Work directly in the codebase and ship production pull requests.
  • Reduce design-to-engineering friction and rework.
  • Build prototyping systems that allow Designers and Product Managers to create high-fidelity experiences using real components and interactive states.
  • Develop AI-powered workflows that reduce gaps in intent, quality, and speed between design and engineering.
  • Establish and model high standards for craft through shipped product work.
  • Help Designers become more code-adjacent and Engineers make better use of design-system infrastructure.
  • Stay current with emerging AI-assisted design and engineering workflows and introduce relevant practices responsibly.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in design engineering, UX engineering, design technology, or a related hybrid discipline.
  • Strong React proficiency.
  • Strong TypeScript and JavaScript proficiency.
  • Strong CSS and HTML skills.
  • Experience with Next.js.
  • Experience building or significantly evolving design systems.
  • Strong design sensibility covering craft, consistency, interaction quality, and visual judgment.
  • Fluency in AI-assisted design and development workflows.
  • Experience with canvas-to-code workflows.
  • Experience with code-to-canvas workflows.
  • Experience with AI prototyping tools.
  • Knowledge of MCP integrations and other emerging AI workflow technologies.
  • Experience with Figma.
  • Experience with Storybook.
  • Experience with VS Code.
  • Experience with Chromatic.
  • Experience with GitHub.
  • Demonstrated track record working across both design and engineering.
  • Ability to operate with substantial autonomy.
  • Ability to set technical and design direction, influence standards, and manage complex work without extensive supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing or engineering data visualizations.
  • Background in brand design.
  • Background in product design.
  • Accessibility expertise, including WCAG 2.2.
  • Experience with ARIA patterns.
  • Strong semantic HTML knowledge.
  • Experience with APCA.
  • Experience building accessible data visualizations.

AI-Native Design Infrastructure

A central objective of this role is making Mixpanel’s design system usable as infrastructure for AI agents and AI-assisted development tools. The goal is to encode design standards, interaction patterns, components, and visual quality directly into systems that AI-enabled workflows can reliably build upon.

The Staff Design Engineer will help establish the technical and design foundations needed for AI-assisted software development without allowing generic AI output to dilute Mixpanel’s product identity or craft standards.

Design-to-Code Ownership

This role sits directly between design and engineering. You will be expected to work in both environments, helping remove discrepancies between intended product design and what ultimately ships.

That includes direct production coding, improving design-system implementation, building tooling that keeps design and code synchronized, and establishing reliable patterns that both human engineers and AI tools can follow.

Prototyping & AI Tooling

You will build workflows that allow Designers and Product Managers to prototype at high fidelity using working code, real components, and interactive states without always waiting for traditional engineering handoffs.

The role includes identifying where design and engineering lose time, quality, or intent and developing AI-assisted systems that reduce those gaps.

What Success Looks Like

  • The design system becomes a reliable foundation for AI tools and agents.
  • Design artifacts and production code remain closely aligned.
  • Designers can create higher-fidelity prototypes without waiting for engineering support.
  • Engineers spend less time on avoidable UI polishing and rework.
  • Mixpanel maintains a cohesive and distinctive product identity as AI-assisted development increases.
  • The organization adopts modern AI-assisted design and engineering workflows responsibly.

Compensation

The Mixpanel compensation range for this position is $236,000–$300,000 USD in total target cash compensation.

The stated TTCC includes base compensation and variable compensation in the form of either a company bonus or commission, depending on role and level.

The position is also eligible for equity consideration and additional employee benefits. Mixpanel states that individual compensation depends on experience, job-related skills, qualifications, and other factors.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical coverage.
  • Vision coverage.
  • Dental coverage.
  • Mental wellness benefit.
  • Generous vacation policy.
  • Additional company holidays.
  • Enhanced parental leave.
  • Volunteer time off.
  • 401(k) and other eligible pre-tax benefits for U.S. employees.
  • Wellness benefit.
  • Holiday break.
  • Equity consideration.
