Role Summary

The Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) plays a pivotal leadership role, driving the strategic and operational direction of Ford Pro Insure’s underwriting function. This position requires a visionary professional capable of aligning profitability, governance, and innovation while ensuring exceptional underwriting performance.

While Commercial Auto is the primary product, the CUO will oversee a diverse portfolio that includes property, casualty, liability, marine, and financial lines, demanding a broad understanding of North American insurance markets and evolving customer needs.

Key Impact

1. Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Direct Ford Pro Insure’s underwriting function, overseeing production, profitability, and risk controls.
  • Set underwriting goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) such as submission rates, quote ratios, and bind ratios.
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team of underwriters, ensuring alignment between authority, accountability, and execution.
  • Collaborate with brokers, MGAs, and distribution partners to strengthen market positioning.

2. Portfolio Optimization & Technical Excellence

  • Oversee the underwriting portfolio using analytics to identify growth opportunities and mitigate risks.
  • Partner with actuarial and modeling teams to enhance pricing strategies and ensure technical soundness.
  • Serve as the senior referral point for complex risks and high-value accounts.
  • Utilize data tools and new technologies to enhance underwriting precision and operational efficiency.

3. Product Development & Market Expansion

  • Guide the creation and evolution of new insurance products and programs, ensuring alignment with the company’s appetite and risk tolerance.
  • Support Ford Pro Insure’s expansion across new states and markets while ensuring full regulatory compliance.
  • Gather competitive intelligence to refine pricing, coverage, and distribution strategies.
  • Oversee state filing processes and regulatory documentation for new and existing products.

4. Governance, Controls & Compliance

  • Establish policies, procedures, and audit frameworks to ensure consistent and high-quality underwriting.
  • Drive automation in underwriting while maintaining robust control mechanisms.
  • Partner with compliance teams to adapt to evolving regulations and effectively manage audit recommendations.
  • Represent the underwriting function in enterprise risk management discussions.

5. Talent Development & Organizational Growth

  • Build a culture of excellence through training, mentorship, and continuous learning.
  • Update underwriting manuals, playbooks, and best practices to reflect changing market conditions.
  • Encourage professional development through cross-functional collaboration and exposure to leadership initiatives.

Preferred Professional

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related discipline (advanced degree preferred).
  • 15+ years of experience in underwriting and insurance product management, including 5+ years in commercial auto.
  • Proven record of leading large underwriting teams and achieving profitable growth.
  • Strong command of underwriting data, risk assessment, and portfolio management.
  • Solid understanding of state-level insurance regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, or equivalent.
  • Prior MGA or multi-line underwriting experience.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills, with the ability to provide concise executive summaries.
  • Experience in governance, automation, and control processes.
