Position Summary

Autodesk’s Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Data organization is seeking a seasoned Software Architect to design and build systems powering cross-cutting data capabilities and their integration with Autodesk’s existing and future AEC products.

The successful candidate will focus on designing and evolving AEC data schemas—the semantic models and structures that enable seamless interoperability across design, construction, and operations workflows. This role requires a passion for data modeling, experience with complex system architectures, and a drive to transform how AEC professionals use data to capture knowledge, inform decisions, and deliver projects.

Reporting to the Distinguished Architect of the AEC Data team, this individual contributor role will collaborate with architects, domain experts, and product teams across Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Autodesk Forma.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

System & Software Architecture

  • Define and evolve cross-team architecture for AEC data platforms and services.
  • Design distributed systems including APIs, event streams, and data pipelines

Data Schema Design & Governance

  • Design, document, and evolve data schemas for buildings, infrastructure, spaces, systems, and components
  • Ensure extensibility, backward compatibility, and semantic representation of AEC domain knowledge.
  • Maintain schema versioning, deprecation policies, and migration patterns

Standards & Interoperability

  • Establish standards, reference architectures, and reusable components
  • Lead architectural decision records and design reviews
  • Implement schema mappings between industry standards (IFC, COBie, CityGML, LandXML) and Autodesk’s internal models

API & Service Design

  • Design REST, GraphQL, and gRPC APIs, ensuring backward compatibility at scale
  • Define serialization formats such as JSON Schema, Avro, or Protobuf

Reliability, Performance & Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Ensure system reliability, security, and performance with SLOs and observability measures
  • Partner with product and platform teams to align roadmaps, validate real-world use cases, and drive adoption
  • Communicate architectures effectively using diagrams and executive-level narratives

Desired Candidate

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience as a Software Architect in data-intensive cloud environments
  • Strong expertise in cloud services, API design, database architecture, and big data frameworks
  • Proficiency in data modeling, schema design, versioning, and evolution strategies
  • Excellent knowledge of software design and architecture patterns
  • Ability to influence cross-team alignment and communicate complex ideas clearly

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the AEC domain with familiarity with industry standards (IFC, COBie, gbXML, CityGML)
  • Cloud experience, particularly AWS (EC2, ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, RDS)
  • Expertise in Snowflake, relational, or NoSQL databases
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures (Kafka, Kinesis) and schema registries
  • REST, gRPC, GraphQL API experience at scale
  • Knowledge of semantic technologies, knowledge graphs, or BIM systems (Revit families)
