Senior Software Engineer – Windows Desktop Applications

Speechify is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the development of its Windows desktop applications. This fully remote position offers the opportunity to build high-performance, accessible software used by millions of people worldwide to improve reading, learning, and accessibility through AI-powered text-to-speech technology.

You will play a leading role in designing application architecture, improving desktop performance, enhancing accessibility, and delivering polished Windows experiences while collaborating with product, design, and engineering teams across a globally distributed organization.

Job Overview

As a Senior Windows Software Engineer, you will own the architecture, development, testing, release, and long-term evolution of Speechify’s Windows desktop platform. You’ll help establish engineering standards, mentor fellow developers, solve complex technical challenges, and ensure every release delivers a fast, reliable, and accessible user experience.

This role is ideal for experienced desktop application engineers who enjoy technical leadership, modern Windows development, and building software that positively impacts millions of users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, and development of native Windows desktop applications.
  • Build applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and native Windows technologies where appropriate.
  • Establish engineering standards for application architecture, maintainability, performance, and code quality.
  • Improve application responsiveness, memory management, startup performance, and compatibility across supported Windows versions.
  • Design and implement accessible user experiences using Microsoft accessibility technologies and best practices.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, UX researchers, QA engineers, and cross-functional teams throughout product development.
  • Own features throughout their complete lifecycle, from design through production support and ongoing maintenance.
  • Investigate and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, rendering issues, and platform compatibility challenges.
  • Conduct code reviews, mentor engineers, and contribute to long-term technical direction.
  • Support continuous improvement of desktop application architecture and engineering processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 36 months of professional Windows desktop application development experience.
  • Strong experience developing applications with Windows App SDK, WinUI (or comparable frameworks), C#, and XAML.
  • Experience working with native Windows technologies including C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM.
  • Deep understanding of Windows application architecture and interoperability between .NET and native code.
  • Proven experience delivering production-quality desktop applications focused on performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows accessibility frameworks such as Microsoft UI Automation.
  • Excellent understanding of object-oriented programming, software design patterns, algorithms, asynchronous programming, and memory management.
  • Experience leading technical design discussions, mentoring engineers, and making architectural decisions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills within distributed engineering teams.
  • Commitment to delivering polished, intuitive, and accessible user experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing automated UI, integration, and unit tests.
  • Knowledge of desktop application performance optimization and high-DPI support.
  • Experience with localization, globalization, and internationalization.
  • Experience implementing telemetry, logging, analytics, crash reporting, and monitoring.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and desktop application deployment strategies.
  • Experience managing long-term feature ownership, refactoring initiatives, and technical debt reduction.
