About Volkswagen AG

Volkswagen AG is committed to shaping tomorrow’s mobility through innovation, responsibility, and sustainable development. Within Volkswagen Group Innovation, forward-thinking concepts are developed to redefine safety, efficiency, and user experience in future mobility solutions.

A central objective of the Group’s research activities is to realize Vision Zero — a road traffic environment without fatalities. To support this mission, the Group Accident Research department investigates real-world accident scenarios and evaluates how modern driver-assistance and safety systems can significantly reduce risk and prevent collisions.

Role Overview

The department is currently inviting applications from motivated students for an internship or thesis opportunity in Accident Research and Driver Assistance System Assessment.

In this role, the selected candidate will help evaluate the effectiveness of automated driving functions, also known as driver-assistance and safety systems. These systems support drivers in performing driving tasks and managing safety-critical situations. Through simulation and data analysis, the role plays an essential part in assessing how such systems influence current accident scenarios.

This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in simulation-based research within a globally recognized automotive innovation environment.

Key Areas of Contribution

1. Research & Literature Analysis

The candidate will become familiar with accident research methodologies and effectiveness assessment approaches. This includes conducting literature studies, reviewing accident databases, and understanding relevant evaluation frameworks.

2. Simulation and System Evaluation

Using simulation software such as openPASS, the intern or thesis student will assess the effectiveness of driver assistance systems in simulated accident scenarios.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing accident data sources, such as GIDAS, for simulation use
  • Supporting the execution of simulation runs
  • Analyzing and presenting simulation outcomes

3. Software Development Support

The role also involves contributing to the development and integration of software components within the simulation process chain. These may include generic driver assistance systems, sensor models, and evaluation components.

The candidate will therefore collaborate with interdisciplinary teams working on technical system validation and performance assessment.
