About Shell in the United Kingdom

Shell operates as a major energy leader in the United Kingdom, supporting national energy security, employment, and economic growth. With a history spanning more than a century, the organization fuels homes, hospitals, schools, transport systems, and industries across the country. As a global company headquartered in the UK and listed on the FTSE, Shell continues to invest in technology and innovation while advancing its ambition to become a net-zero emissions business.

Within this context, Shell’s Trading and Supply division relies on advanced digital systems to manage complex freight and voyage operations. The organization now seeks a Freight Lead Software Engineer to support a large-scale transformation initiative.

Role Overview

Shell is recruiting a Freight Lead Software Engineer to serve as Technical Lead for a strategic freight transformation program. The project aims to implement Veson IMOS as a modern voyage management platform while replacing the existing RADAR system. In parallel, the team will build a bespoke in-house solution for demurrage and PDE calculations, fully integrated with enterprise trading risk management systems.

The successful candidate will lead architectural decisions, establish engineering standards, and guide development teams to deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions aligned with Shell’s enterprise vision.

Core Areas of Responsibility

1. Digital Freight Platform Leadership

The Freight Lead Software Engineer will play a central role in delivering an integrated freight management platform. The position requires ownership of technical design across both Veson IMOS implementation and the associated custom solution.

The role also involves defining architectural principles, integration models, and technology selections that ensure long-term sustainability and enterprise alignment.

2. Technical Architecture and Engineering Standards

The appointed leader will define and document system architecture, integration patterns, and platform decisions. In addition, they will evaluate frameworks and tools while balancing cost, risk, complexity, and business value.

They will ensure compliance with non-functional requirements, including scalability, security, performance, and maintainability. Architectural reviews, engineering governance, and technical mentorship will form a critical part of their mandate.

3. Engineering Team Leadership

The role requires extensive experience in software delivery and demonstrated leadership across large-scale programs. The Freight Lead Software Engineer will direct engineering workloads, partition responsibilities, and ensure accountability.

Moreover, the individual will cultivate motivated and collaborative teams while driving consistency through engineering management standards and reusable design patterns.

4. Collaboration Across Business and Technology

Close collaboration with business stakeholders and technology partners remains essential. The role demands the ability to interpret business objectives, translate them into actionable technical strategies, and manage expectations effectively.

Active participation in broader engineering and Tech Lead communities within Shell will further strengthen alignment and knowledge sharing.

5. Problem Solving and Innovation

The successful candidate will diagnose system challenges and deliver innovative solutions that fit within Shell Trading’s broader technology landscape. They will manage dependencies, navigate constraints, and address technical debt through structured trade-off decisions.

Technical Expertise and Competencies

Industry and Domain Knowledge

The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in voyage management and direct experience with Veson IMOS. In addition, they possess a comprehensive understanding of the trading system landscape, particularly across the Life of a Deal cycle.

Software Engineering and Platforms

Candidates should demonstrate deep expertise in full-stack development, with proficiency in technologies such as React, Node.js, and Python, and cloud-native development experience on AWS or Azure.

Strong knowledge of data engineering practices, including SQL and NoSQL databases, cloud data stores, and pipeline development, is essential. Experience with Databricks, Spark, and Azure Data Factory represents an advantage.

Cloud and Architecture

The role requires experience in designing and building microservices, containers, and cloud-native applications. Familiarity with federated data platforms and distributed event-driven architectures is highly valued.

Exposure to Azure services such as Azure Functions, Azure Data Lake, Azure Storage, Azure Kubernetes Service, Cosmos DB, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, and Azure Active Directory will strengthen candidacy.

DevOps and Delivery Practices

Applicants should have at least five years of experience in continuous integration and deployment using tools such as Git, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Terraform, and Ansible.

Practical experience working within agile frameworks across both enterprise and growth environments is also expected.

Candidate Requirements

Education

A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline is expected. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.

Professional Experience

Candidates must demonstrate extensive experience in software engineering delivery, including significant leadership experience overseeing engineering teams and large-scale transformation programs.
