Role Summary
Shell is strengthening its digital backbone by investing in advanced freight and trading technologies. For this purpose, the organization is hiring a Freight Lead Software Engineer who will operate at a senior technical leadership level. This role focuses on building and delivering an integrated freight management platform for Trading and Supply operations.
The selected professional will lead a significant transformation initiative that replaces the existing RADAR system with Veson IMOS. Alongside this implementation, the role involves developing a custom in-house demurrage and PDE calculation system, fully integrated with Shell’s Energy Trading and Risk Management platforms.

Key Responsibilities and Impact Areas
Platform Architecture and Technical Leadership
The Freight Lead Software Engineer holds ownership of architectural decisions across the freight management ecosystem. This includes designing scalable, secure, and maintainable systems that align with enterprise-wide technology standards and long-term strategic goals.
The role also involves setting engineering standards, reviewing architectural designs, and ensuring technical consistency across all development streams.
Freight Platform Delivery
A central responsibility is leading the successful delivery of the new freight management platform. This includes overseeing the technical implementation of Veson IMOS and guiding the development of bespoke internal systems.
The role requires close coordination with engineering teams to ensure that technical designs are implemented efficiently while meeting non-functional requirements such as performance, security, and scalability.
Engineering Team Leadership
The position demands hands-on leadership across small and large delivery teams. This includes task partitioning, accountability management, and fostering collaboration across cross-functional engineering groups.
The role also contributes actively to Shell’s wider Tech Lead and engineering communities by sharing best practices and supporting continuous improvement.
Stakeholder Collaboration and Communication
The Freight Lead Software Engineer collaborates closely with business leaders and IT stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions. Strong communication skills are essential for managing expectations, facilitating discussions, and guiding decision-making with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Professional Background and Expertise
Industry and Domain Knowledge
The ideal candidate brings strong experience in voyage and freight management systems. Prior exposure to Veson IMOS is highly desirable.
A solid understanding of the trading system landscape and the full life cycle of a deal within energy trading environments is also required.
Leadership and Delivery Experience
Candidates should demonstrate extensive experience in software delivery, with several years spent leading engineering teams on large-scale transformation programs.
Proven ability to build motivated teams, manage workloads, and deliver complex solutions within enterprise environments is essential.
Technical Design and Decision Making
This role requires deep expertise in defining and documenting system architectures, integration patterns, and technology stacks.
The successful candidate will confidently guide engineering decisions, balance risk and value, and ensure pragmatic solutions that meet business objectives.
Technical Skills and Engineering Mastery
Software Development and Cloud Platforms
Strong full-stack development expertise is required, particularly with React.js, Node.js, and Python.
Experience with cloud native development using platforms such as Azure or AWS is essential, including microservices, containerization, and federated data platforms.
Data Engineering and Analytics
The role requires deep knowledge of data engineering practices, including pipeline development, storage, lifecycle management, and data security.
Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases is mandatory. Exposure to Databricks, Spark, or Azure Data Factory is considered an advantage.
Azure Ecosystem and Integration
Candidates should have practical experience with Azure services such as Azure Functions, Web Apps, Kubernetes Service, Data Lake, CosmosDB, and Azure SQL Data Warehouse.
Familiarity with event-driven and distributed architectures, using tools such as Kafka, Event Hub, or ELK, is expected.
DevOps and Agile Delivery
A minimum of 5 years of experience in CI/CD delivery is required, using tools such as Git, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Terraform, or Ansible.
The role also requires strong agile delivery experience across both startup-style teams and enterprise environments.
