Within the first year, the Software Engineer will transition from onboarding and contributing to small-scale improvements to leading backend features, handling multiple workstreams, and shaping the future of Microsoft’s cloud platforms.

Core Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for Microsoft’s Serial Console, Cloud Shell, and future cloud infrastructure tools.
- Develop secure, reliable, and scalable distributed systems serving millions of global users.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including UX, product, and operations—to deliver end-to-end technical solutions.
- Participate in code and architecture reviews, ensuring quality, maintainability, and scalability.
- Diagnose, optimize, and enhance performance and system reliability.
- Engage in on-call rotations and handle incident responses to maintain high service availability.
- Continuously adopt new technologies and engineering best practices in the cloud ecosystem.

Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience coding in one or more of the following languages: C++, Rust, C#, Go, Java, or Python.
- Strong understanding of networking, cloud infrastructure, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of hands-on software engineering experience in backend or distributed systems.
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to design and ship scalable cloud solutions.
Security & Compliance Requirements
Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft’s internal and external security screening standards. This includes passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire and every two years thereafter.
Career Growth Path
In the first 60 days, engineers will gain deep familiarity with team systems and architecture while tackling small improvements. By the 120-day mark, they will lead backend feature development and contribute to significant cloud service enhancements. Within six months, they’ll deliver impactful features or participate in a new initiative and begin on-call rotations—paving the way toward greater ownership and technical leadership within their first year.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base Salary: USD $84,200 – $165,200 annually (higher ranges in the San Francisco Bay Area and NYC: $109,000 – $180,400).
