Staff Software Engineer, Experimentation Platform

About the Opportunity

Discord is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead development of its next-generation experimentation platform and help improve how teams test hypotheses, evaluate product changes, and make data-informed decisions.

This is a full-time remote position within the United States. The role combines full-stack software engineering, data infrastructure, experimentation systems, developer tooling, statistical analysis, and technical leadership.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and support Discord’s next-generation experimentation platform.
• Develop core experimentation services, data pipelines, configuration tooling, statistical analysis tools, and user-facing workflows.
• Help build AI-assisted experimentation workflows.
• Work with technical and non-technical stakeholders across Discord.
• Improve product telemetry practices so experiments can be measured reliably.
• Build high-scale internal tools and data systems used by teams working on products serving millions of users.
• Support experimentation across product features, machine learning systems, and other business initiatives.
• Lead complex technical projects from high-level goals through production-ready implementation.
• Mentor and develop engineers across multiple levels.

Required Experience

Candidates need at least seven years of experience as a full-stack software engineer.

Discord is looking for engineers who have built internal tools and understand A/B testing and statistical experimentation frameworks. Experience with experimentation tooling is required, while having built major parts of an experimentation platform from scratch is especially valuable.

The role also requires substantial experience leading complex technical projects and delivering successful production outcomes.

Technical Skills

Strong Python and SQL skills are required.

Candidates should also have experience working with multiple types of datastores, including relational databases, NoSQL systems, and data warehouse technologies.

Experience with TypeScript or Rust is considered an additional advantage.

The role also requires experience building systems with strong data-governance controls and attention to privacy and security principles.

Experimentation and Data

This position sits at the intersection of software engineering, experimentation infrastructure, statistics, telemetry, and large-scale data systems.

Relevant background includes A/B testing, experimentation platforms, data pipelines, product telemetry, statistical analysis, and data governance.

Leadership and Collaboration

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will work cross-functionally with stakeholders throughout Discord and help shape technical direction for experimentation systems.

Strong product judgment and communication skills are important, along with a track record of mentoring and developing engineers.

Preferred Background

Additional useful experience includes human-in-the-loop AI systems, AI product evaluation, cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform or AWS, modern data-processing stacks, product engineering, data science, statistics, and large-scale data processing.

Compensation

The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $248,000 to $279,000 USD per year.

This amount represents base salary only. Equity and employee benefits are separate and should not be included in the salary range.
