Before accepting a remote job, put the training hours and the regular shift on separate calendars. A weekday class may start hours before the shift you want. If a posting lists a range of possible shifts, ask when your own hours will be assigned before making plans around a specific start or end time.
This matters in remote customer support, where you may learn the systems in a live class before taking calls. TTEC’s work-from-home FAQ describes mandatory paid training, on a fixed schedule, with duration varying by project. Confirm the class for your role. TTEC training FAQ.
Get the dates for each stage
Start with the requisition and offer. Find the first-day setup, instructor-led training, any supervised practice and the regular shift. Supervised practice may be called nesting. Ask whether it follows the training calendar or has its own hours. For each required stage, write down dates, days, start and end times, time zone and whether you must attend in person.
Mercury Insurance’s U.S. Customer Support Specialist requisition 2026-6905 gives an example. It listed four weeks of paid training starting November 30, 2026, on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. The regular 40-hour schedule includes Saturday work. The posting is labeled Remote, Florida and says an in-person interview may be required. Confirm eligibility for your address with the employer. A state pay band alone leaves that question open. Check the current requisition if you use this example. Mercury’s official posting.
Turn the stated hours into local calendar blocks
Put the first class and the first regular shift on actual calendar dates. Use the time zone the recruiter confirms, then view each event in your own zone. Compare both blocks with school drop-off, another job, appointments or other commitments you cannot move. Check training end dates and weekend requirements before you commit to a recurring arrangement.
Suppose you live in Phoenix and an employer has confirmed your address is eligible. A hypothetical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. New York class in November runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Phoenix. A proposed regular shift of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Phoenix time fits if you cannot start work until 8 a.m. The class conflicts. Ask about a later class before counting the role as a fit.
If the same New York class moves to a date when New York observes daylight saving time, it starts at 6 a.m. in Phoenix. Check the first and last weeks if dates cross a clock change. If the recruiter writes “EST” for a schedule that spans seasons, ask whether it follows New York’s local clock or stays at a fixed offset. NIST daylight saving time rules.
Mark each shift as assigned, a window, or unknown
Copy these rows into your notes. Put local times and dates beside each assigned block. When you get a window of possible hours, record the earliest start, latest end and when the employer expects to confirm your assignment.
- First day and training. Record the class dates, local hours, attendance rules and any trip to a site. Mark which details are assigned and which are unknown.
- Supervised practice, if required. Record its dates, hours and any weekend coverage separately. Ask when the practice schedule will be confirmed.
- Regular shift. Record your assigned days and local hours or the range the employer can assign. Include any required Saturday, Sunday or holiday coverage.
- Decision. Mark each stage fits, conflicts or needs an answer. Write down the missing detail that would change whether you accept.
A written window can leave an important decision open. Alight’s customer-care onboarding page says it assigns shifts after training within the hours and days in the offer letter and cannot guarantee a particular end time. If you must finish by 5 p.m., check the latest possible end time and ask when you will know your assigned shift. Alight customer-care onboarding.
Ask for the detail that decides whether you can accept
Try this message to the recruiter. “I’m available from 8 a.m. Phoenix time. Could you confirm the training dates and time zone, any supervised practice hours, and when my regular shift will be assigned? If this class starts earlier than 8 a.m. in Phoenix, is a later class available for the same role?”
Save the answer with the offer. If an essential block remains open, record when it will be confirmed and decide whether you can accept the full range of possible hours. For a different schedule constraint, see how to read a remote overlap window. If there is a computer check before class, use the wired internet guide. Confirm the approved address separately with the remote job location guide.
