Senior Lifecycle Counsel, International – Employment & EOR (Remote)
Justworks is hiring a Senior Lifecycle Counsel, International to provide legal support for complex employment lifecycle matters across its Employer of Record offering. This international remote role focuses on sensitive and escalated matters including terminations, performance management, leave, employee relations, accommodations, employment disputes, and related cross-border employment issues.
The position also plays an important role in developing scalable legal standards, playbooks, escalation paths, decision frameworks, documentation, and training that help operational teams manage routine lifecycle matters consistently and identify situations requiring Legal involvement.
Job Overview
As Senior Lifecycle Counsel, International, you will lead legal work on complex EOR employment lifecycle matters while partnering with regional employment counsel, Operations, Customer Service, Payroll, Benefits, Product, Sales, and outside counsel. You will also turn recurring legal issues into scalable processes and guidance for teams operating across multiple markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Legal workstream for sensitive, complex, or escalated EOR lifecycle matters requiring legal involvement.
- Advise on complex terminations, redundancies, settlements, protected leave, accommodations, pay equity claims, employee relations, performance management, and employment disputes.
- Serve as the legal point of contact for complex termination and offboarding matters requiring Legal involvement.
- Help teams assess risk, define strategy, align stakeholders, prepare required documentation, and move employment matters from intake through resolution.
- Partner with regional employment counsel to translate local legal requirements into practical guidance for operational and commercial teams.
- Promote consistency in employment lifecycle practices across markets.
- Build and maintain lifecycle standards, playbooks, escalation paths, controls, decision frameworks, and training.
- Use recurring matter patterns to help operational teams handle routine issues consistently and identify when higher-risk matters should be escalated to Legal.
- Advise Product and Operations on legal requirements, risk parameters, workflow logic, case-management controls, customer guidance, knowledge bases, and standard operating procedures.
- Support Customer Service and Sales on complex EOR lifecycle questions from prospective and existing customers.
- Develop and deliver practical training and guidance for internal stakeholders and, where appropriate, external audiences.
- Manage outside counsel on complex lifecycle matters, market-specific escalations, employment disputes, and operational guidance.
- Monitor relevant legal and operational developments across key markets and update internal guidance, training, and processes as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree.
- Admission to practice law in at least one relevant jurisdiction.
- Minimum 5+ years of substantive employment law experience.
- Deep experience advising on employee lifecycle matters including complex terminations, performance management, leave, employee relations, employment documentation, recurring compliance, and dispute risk across multiple jurisdictions.
- Proven ability to develop legal standards, risk frameworks, escalation paths, playbooks, policies, knowledge bases, and standard operating procedures.
- Strong understanding of translating employment-law requirements into operational workflows, product requirements, customer guidance, and internal controls.
- Sound judgment when managing legal, operational, customer, employee, financial, and reputational risk in sensitive employment matters.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders clearly and practically.
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and influence stakeholders.
- Strong time-management, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple complex matters across time zones.
- Experience managing outside counsel and obtaining practical, cost-effective legal advice across multiple jurisdictions.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house employment law experience is preferred.
- Experience with international employment counseling, EOR, PEO, global mobility, HR technology, or other cross-border employment operations is preferred.
- Experience supporting an EOR business, global employment platform, international HR operations, or multi-country employment counseling is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in another relevant language is considered a plus.
