What the Red Team Does
The Red Team focuses on adversary simulation, mimicking real-world cyber threats to reveal vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them. By combining research, operational expertise, and cross-team collaboration, the Red Team strengthens Target’s overall defenses.
Their work includes:
- Designing and executing adversary emulation operations
- Researching threat actor tactics, techniques, and procedures
- Building proof-of-concept tools and playbooks
- Bypassing controls to measure risk and resilience
- Partnering with incident response and intelligence teams
- Educating engineering teams across the organization
This is not a management role. Instead, it is a senior operator position where you will lead engagements, train junior operators, and mentor teammates.
What You Will Experience in This Role
As a Lead Engineer – Red Team, you will take on responsibilities that influence both Target’s defensive strategies and the growth of your peers.
Your work will include:
- Developing strategic objectives for adversary emulation
- Executing operations to identify and surface organizational risks
- Collaborating with partner teams to plan and run cooperative engagements
- Training operators and sharing knowledge through mentorship
- Presenting findings and insights in clear and professional ways
- Researching and applying real-world threat actor techniques
- Writing and reviewing code that supports Red Team goals
- Contributing to tool and process improvements
- Managing work effectively using tools such as GitHub and JIRA
Adapting quickly to changing priorities in a dynamic environment.
The Expertise You Bring
Target seeks professionals with proven experience who can handle complex security challenges while fostering collaboration and improvement.
You should have:
- At least four years of experience in offensive or defensive security
- Strong knowledge of offensive security techniques
- A clear understanding of the impact of Red Team operations on business and customers
- The ability to resolve complex technical issues with minimal assistance
- A talent for respectful communication and technical mentorship
- A commitment to continuous learning in security technologies
- A mindset focused on improving processes and building team trust
Preferred skills that strengthen your application include:
- Hands-on Red Team adversary emulation experience
- Experience with Blue Team operations, such as detection or incident response
- Exposure to large, complex organizations
- Programming knowledge in Python, C#, Rust, Go, or C
- The ability to creatively solve problems and replicate threat actor tools and methods
- Awareness of current and emerging threat actor trends
Work Arrangement and Flexibility
This position can be considered for both Remote and Hybrid (Flex for Your Day) arrangements, depending on team needs. Remote employees may work full-time from home and can expect occasional travel to headquarters, up to four times a year. Hybrid employees have the flexibility to work onsite or remotely based on role and team requirements.
Compensation and Benefits
The pay range for this role is $128,000 to $231,000 USD annually. Exact compensation depends on factors such as the labor market, education, experience, and certifications.
