Role Overview

The Firefighter serves as a member of a structured emergency response team responsible for fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous material response, and emergency medical care. The position supports a large industrial installation where complex structures and specialized equipment demand advanced firefighting capabilities.

The selected individual operates within a crew environment and contributes directly to life safety, environmental protection, and asset preservation.

Core Responsibilities

Structural Fire Suppression

The Firefighter responds to structural incidents involving industrial facilities and operational infrastructure. Duties include controlling and extinguishing fires using hoses, ladders, hydrants, and rescue equipment. The role requires operating pumps, foam systems, and boom nozzles while applying established fire control strategies under hazardous conditions.

Rescue Operations

The incumbent conducts search-and-rescue operations in confined spaces, elevated areas, and other high-risk locations. The role demands physical strength and situational awareness to move and transport individuals weighing up to 180 pounds.

Hazardous Materials Response

As a member of a hazardous materials response team, the Firefighter assists with spill and release containment, control, and mitigation. The position requires adherence to safety protocols to protect personnel, property, and the environment.

Emergency Medical Services

The Firefighter performs duties as an Emergency Medical Technician and delivers Basic Life Support care. Responsibilities include assessing medical emergencies, initiating approved treatment protocols, communicating patient conditions to medical facilities, and documenting vital signs and other critical information.

Equipment and Vehicle Operations

The role involves assisting in the operation and maintenance of firefighting vehicles, including pumpers and aerial ladder trucks. The Firefighter inspects, tests, and maintains tools and apparatus to ensure operational readiness.

Employment Conditions

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must qualify for federal employment suitability determination
  • Must obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Must complete a pre-appointment physical examination
  • Must pass a drug test and remain subject to random testing
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program
  • Must register with the Selective Service if required by law
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license
  • Must maintain respirator certification
  • Must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program
  • Must wear protective equipment during shifts, which may weigh between 50 and 60 pounds
  • Must be available for night, weekend, and holiday shifts as mission needs dictate

This position is designated as Mission Essential; the incumbent ensures operational continuity during emergencies or contingency situations.

Relocation expenses or incentives may be authorized in accordance with applicable regulations.

Required Certifications

Applicants must hold the following certifications before appointment:

  • Firefighter I and II (ProBoard or IFSAC)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness
  • Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Emergency Medical Technician Basic Life Support certification at the state level or through the National Registry

For GS 5 consideration, applicants must also possess:

  • Hazardous Materials Technician certification

Qualification Standards

GS 4 Level

Applicants must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-3 level in federal service or comparable experience in public or private sector employment.

Qualifying experience includes operating firefighting equipment, applying fire suppression principles, responding to hazardous material incidents, conducting rescue procedures, and maintaining emergency response vehicles and tools.

GS 5 Level

Applicants must demonstrate at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level.

Experience must reflect competence in advanced firefighting operations, hazardous material response using protective systems, vehicle inspection procedures, and structured rescue strategies.

Additional qualification standards are available through the Office of Personnel Management Fire Protection and Prevention Series 0081 guidelines.

Education Criteria

Education may substitute for experience under the following standards:

GS 4

Completion of a two-year program in Fire Science, Fire Training, or a closely related field from an accredited institution may qualify. A combination of education and experience may also be accepted if it equals one year of required preparation.

GS 5

Completion of a four-year degree program in Fire Science, Fire Training, or a related discipline from an accredited institution may qualify. A combination of relevant education and experience may also satisfy the requirement.

Applicants relying on education must submit official transcripts. Appropriate firefighter training may substitute for experience on a month-by-month basis.

Evaluation Process

Applicants will be evaluated based on demonstrated experience, education, and documented competencies relevant to the position.
