Role Summary

The Foundation and Government Giving Assistant Manager supports the planning, coordination, and execution of foundation and government grant initiatives. The role works closely with internal teams and external funders to secure and steward funding for the Kennedy Center and its artistic affiliates.

This position plays a key role in grant writing, donor communication, and project coordination. It requires strong writing ability, sound judgment, and consistent collaboration across departments.

Primary Focus Areas

Grant Strategy and Execution

The role supports solicitation strategies for foundation and government funders. It ensures timely and accurate proposal submissions and reporting.

Writing and Documentation

The Assistant Manager drafts and edits proposals, reports, donor briefings, and acknowledgment letters. Budget narratives and financial summaries are also prepared as needed.

Project Coordination

Grant-related projects are managed through clear timelines and internal coordination. The role works with program teams, finance, marketing, and evaluation staff to gather required information.

Donor Stewardship

The position supports donor engagement by recognizing, communicating with, and fulfilling donor needs. This includes ticketing and event-related coordination when required.

Portfolio Support

Assigned funders are stewarded to maintain strong relationships and ongoing support for the organization and its affiliates.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Independent judgment and adaptability are essential, especially in high-demand periods. A proactive mindset and collaborative communication style are critical to success.

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • A minimum of four years of development experience or equivalent professional or educational experience is expected.
  • Experience in nonprofit or performing arts environments is strongly preferred.

Core Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong writing and editing skills are essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities are required.
  • A creative approach to communicating funding needs is essential.
  • Professionalism, diplomacy, and discretion are necessary when engaging with donors and leadership.
  • Basic knowledge of fundraising or relationship management systems, such as Tessitura, is required.
  • The candidate must be local or willing to relocate to the DMV area. Relocation assistance is not provided. 
  • On-site work is required.
