Role Summary
eBay is advancing a major modernization initiative within its Batch Platform by moving from Broadcom Automic to Apache Airflow. To support this transition, the company is seeking an experienced Software Engineer III with deep expertise in Apache Airflow.
This platform engineering role centers on building and operating Airflow as a managed service. The selected professional will enable hundreds of internal users to orchestrate complex workflows across multiple marketplace domains, while shaping the foundational capabilities that power thousands of business workflows globally.
Core Responsibilities and Focus Areas
Workflow Platform Engineering
The role involves designing, developing, and maintaining Airflow as a service to support large-scale batch processing needs, while ensuring system availability, security, and performance.
Infrastructure, Reliability, and Scalability
The engineer leads the deployment and management of Airflow clusters, with a strong focus on high availability, horizontal scaling, and reliability across cloud-based infrastructure.
Observability and Operations
Responsibilities include implementing monitoring, metrics, alerting, and logging solutions that provide deep visibility into DAG execution, task performance, and overall platform health.
Scheduler Modernization and Migration
The position requires evaluating feature gaps between legacy schedulers and Apache Airflow, while designing solutions that bridge functionality and support enterprise-level migration.
Automation and Standards
The role supports automating operational processes and enforcing consistent standards across multiple environments to ensure smooth platform operations.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Education and Experience
Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field and have 7 or more years of relevant experience. A Master’s degree with at least five years of professional software engineering experience is also acceptable.
Technical Expertise
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience delivering Apache Airflow as a managed enterprise service. Strong expertise in Kubernetes or cloud-based Airflow deployments is essential, including experience with DAG synchronization, operational challenges, and multi-region failover.
Workflow and Scheduler Knowledge
A deep understanding of workflow automation patterns, enterprise scheduler migrations, and legacy platform modernization is required. Familiarity with Automic Enterprise Scheduler is considered an advantage.
Leadership and Collaboration
The role calls for strong technical leadership, initiative, and the ability to collaborate effectively within fast engineering programs.

Compensation and Benefits Overview
The base salary for this role ranges from $115,200 to $199,700 per year. Actual compensation depends on factors such as location, skills, and experience. The total rewards package may also include performance-based bonuses, restricted stock units, comprehensive medical coverage, financial benefits, retirement plans, including 401(k) s, and paid time-off programs, such as parental leave.
