About the Job

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) is a key member of the National TeleOncology Service (NTO) team at the Durham VA Medical Center. This role offers a unique opportunity to directly support veterans and their families by providing information on available programs, coordinating care needs, and facilitating access to genetic clinical counseling and testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patient intakes, including obtaining family medical history and genetic pedigree information.
  • Gather necessary data from various sources to support clinical encounters.
  • Utilize tools such as BOADICEA, Tyrer Cuzick, and FamGenix for cancer and mutation risk assessment.
  • Manage patient records and ensure documentation is accurately maintained in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to ensure efficient patient flow and communication.

Qualifications:

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Experience: Six months of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work.
  • Education: One year of education above high school.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Grade Determinations: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-05 level.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with medical clinicians across multiple disciplines.
    • Ability to prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process, including scheduling and patient health care portals.
    • Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery.
    • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in a laboratory or medical setting.
  • Experience utilizing an electronic health record.
  • Experience directly interacting with veterans.
