REMOTE CAREER ADVICE & SKILLS
What should a remote work status update include?
A useful remote work status update identifies the task, current progress, next action, and any blocker or decision needed. Include timing, ownership, and relevant links when they help someone act. Write enough context for a colleague to understand the work without asking you to explain it again.
Asynchronous communication means people can read and respond at different times. Your employer’s expectations still govern response times, working hours, and availability.
- Describe the work, not just how busy you are.
- Make requests specific and estimates honest.
- Confirm who owns the next action.
GitLab’s AI Coding team uses structured weekly updates covering progress, next steps, and blockers. That is GitLab’s process; follow your own team’s format and cadence.
1. Routine progress update: show what changed
Use this work status update template when someone needs visibility into an ongoing task.
Copyable progress template
Task/outcome: [What I am working toward]
Completed/current status: [Finished work and what remains]
Next step: [My next action]
Timing: [Confirmed deadline OR estimated completion; next update]
Help needed: [Specific request, or none currently]
Reference: [Relevant document or task link, if needed]
Vague: “Still working on the spreadsheet. Should be done soon.”
Improved: data-entry example
Contact-list cleanup: I have checked 80 of 120 fictional records and marked six possible duplicates in the review tab. Next, I will check the remaining 40. Estimated completion: 15 October, 2 p.m. UTC, assuming no additional source checks. I will update you by noon UTC that day if the estimate changes. No help needed currently. Reference: contact-list review sheet.
The improved version makes progress measurable and gives the reader a next checkpoint. It also separates uncertain duplicate records from confirmed corrections.
A deadline is an agreed requirement; an estimate is your best forecast. Label them accurately. If completion is uncertain, commit to a realistic next update rather than an unsupported finish time.
2. Blocker or help request: ask for a decision
A useful blocker message explains the obstacle without blaming someone. Replace “It doesn’t work” with what is blocked and what would unblock it.
Copyable blocker template
Blocked: [Task and obstacle]
Checked/tried: [Relevant checks already completed]
Impact: [What cannot proceed]
Request: [Specific decision, permission, or input; decision owner]
Answer needed: [Date, time zone, and reason]
Meanwhile: [Useful work I can continue]
Reference: [Restricted ticket or document link]
Example: customer-support approval
Ticket DEMO-204 is blocked on refund approval. I checked the fictional refund policy and ticket history: the request is outside the standard return window, and no exception is recorded. I cannot authorize a refund. Maya, please approve or decline the exception by 15 October, 1 p.m. UTC so I can meet the agreed customer-response deadline. Meanwhile, I can draft both response options and handle unrelated tickets. Context is in the restricted ticket.
This works because the decision owner knows what to decide, why it matters, and what has already been checked. The sender avoids promising an unauthorized refund.
Urgent incident? Follow your employer’s escalation procedure and required immediate-contact channel. A routine asynchronous message does not replace urgent contact.
3. Handoff: make the next action easy
Copyable remote handoff template
Task/current state: [Where the work stands]
Completed: [Finished actions]
Pending: [Outstanding actions]
Reference: [Document or ticket and relevant section]
Next owner: [Name; acceptance confirmed or requested]
Next action/deadline: [Action, full date, time, and time zone]
Risk/question: [Unresolved issue and its consequence]
Example: London-to-New York coordination
Workshop scheduling is ready for final checks. I confirmed the speakers and saved the draft agenda in DEMO-88; attendee invitations remain unsent. Jordan in New York has confirmed ownership. Next: check the attendee list and send invitations by 14 October 2026, 4 p.m. Europe/London (BST, UTC+1), which is 11 a.m. America/New_York (EDT, UTC−4). Risk: one speaker’s accessibility requirements are unconfirmed; resolve them before sending.
The receiver gets a starting point, an accepted responsibility, and a specific unresolved question. Both cities observe daylight saving on this example date; recheck conversions for other dates.
For an ambiguous or high-risk handoff, arrange a short live discussion and ask the receiver to confirm their understanding. Record the agreed actions afterward. GitLab’s communication guidance also recognizes situations where synchronous discussion is appropriate.
4. Practise before applying: a 10-minute exercise
Spend two minutes choosing one task from a current job description and identifying its communication requirements. Spend five minutes writing the appropriate message using fictional information, then three minutes reviewing it:
This is a practical checklist, not a validated assessment.
Save the result as “Self-directed communication sample — fictional scenario.” Add the task brief and explain your choices. WorkinVirtual’s 48-hour work-sample guide explains how to package practice honestly. It is not paid employment or employer endorsement.
If AI helps improve wording, follow employer policy, keep sensitive data out, and verify every factual detail.
