Role Summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a qualified Physician to serve in a clinical and academic capacity within Geriatrics and Extended Care services. This role combines direct patient care, clinical oversight, and leadership in graduate medical education. The position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program, subject to eligibility review and approval.

The Education Debt Reduction Program may provide student loan reimbursement of up to $200,000. The eligibility period ranges from one to five years and is determined after application review. Applications for EDRP must be submitted within four months of appointment. Former EDRP participants are not eligible to apply.

Key Clinical Responsibilities

The Physician provides comprehensive clinical oversight and medical leadership for assigned patients and care teams. Responsibilities include reviewing and guiding treatment plans while remaining accessible for interdisciplinary collaboration. Care delivery must align with evidence-based medical practices and accepted clinical standards.

This role requires ensuring timely care delivery in appropriate clinical settings. Oversight of delegated clinical activities performed by Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, PharmD professionals, and other providers practicing within defined scopes of practice is essential.

The Physician is responsible for completing all clinical documentation in CPRS accurately and within required timeframes. Coordination of specialty consultations and implementation of consultant recommendations are integral to the role.

Infection control duties include immunization oversight, skin testing, and infection prevention practices. Cross-coverage across approved Geriatrics and Extended Care services is expected within the scope of privileges approved by the Professional Standards Board.

The Physician must maintain active privileges and continuous practice within their specialty. Privileges and approved procedures are reviewed and authorized by the Professional Standards Board.

Academic and Educational Leadership

The Physician supports undergraduate and graduate medical education initiatives and collaborates with Medical Directors on educational programming. Responsibilities include orientation and supervision of residents, fellows, and students assigned to service rotations.

The role serves as the single Program Director for the Geriatric Fellowship Program, with full authority and accountability for program operations. This includes maintaining an educational environment that supports all ACGME competency areas.

The Program Director prepares and submits all required documentation to the ACGME and ensures ongoing compliance with ACGME and Review Committee policies. Monitoring fellow well-being is a critical responsibility, including identifying stress-related, emotional, or substance-related issues that may affect performance or learning.

The Physician participates in academic societies and professional development programs to enhance educational and administrative expertise. Continuous quality improvement initiatives in medical education are implemented, with a strong focus on faculty teaching effectiveness and competency-based evaluation.

Compensation and Benefits Overview

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers a comprehensive total rewards package.

Annual compensation includes a competitive salary with eligibility for performance-based bonuses and regular salary increases.

Paid time off ranges from 50 to 55 days annually, including annual leave, sick leave, federal holidays, and possible paid absence for continuing medical education.

Employment Conditions and Compliance

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all VA healthcare personnel. A probationary period may be required.

Physical requirements include moderate lifting and carrying, extended periods of walking and standing, adequate vision and hearing, color differentiation, and mental and emotional stability.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must meet all basic physician qualification standards established by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine is required from an accredited institution recognized during the year of graduation.

Applicants must hold a current, complete, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Completion of an accredited residency program approved by ACGME or AOA is required. Non-U.S. residency training may be considered with at least five years of verified U.S. practice, subject to Medical Staff Executive Committee approval.

Physicians currently in residency may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers under limited appointment conditions, provided they meet licensure requirements.

Preferred Experience

Board certification or board eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine is preferred.

Strong preference is given to candidates with specialized experience in Geriatrics and Long-Term Care, fellowship training in Geriatrics, and at least 2 years of experience serving geriatric or palliative care populations.

Experience in inpatient hospital settings is highly valued. Volunteer and unpaid professional experience are considered and credited when relevant.
