A Rewarding Opportunity

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement initiative offering up to $200,000 over a period of one to five years. Eligibility and award determinations are made by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office following application review. Please note that former EDRP participants are ineligible.

About the Medical Center

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center, a leading facility within VISN 2, is home to the only VA-certified Primary Stroke Center in the region, providing long-term video EEG monitoring for epilepsy. The center collaborates closely with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, hosting neurology residents and medical students for advanced clinical clerkships.

Its Neurology Service extends specialized telemedicine services to VAs across the East Coast, including rural areas in New York and Georgia. The department’s faculty actively engage in federally and privately funded research focusing on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury.

Responsibilities and Focus Areas

The Chief of Neurology will oversee a multidisciplinary team delivering both outpatient and inpatient neurological care, consultations, and emergency services. The incumbent will lead strategic initiatives to enhance clinical operations, expand telehealth services, support education and training programs, and foster innovative research collaborations.

Key areas include:

  1. Oversight of neurological programs, clinical operations, and academic partnerships.
  2. Direction of telemedicine expansion to underserved veteran populations.
  3. Leadership in stroke care, movement disorders, and epilepsy management.
  4. Development of training and mentorship programs for residents and fellows.
  5. Promotion of a culture of excellence in patient care and evidence-based practice.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate demonstrates visionary leadership, academic distinction, and a strong commitment to improving neurological health outcomes for veterans. Candidates must be proficient in English and capable of fostering collaboration across departments and institutions.

Education & Licensure Requirements

  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited institution (LCME or AOA).
  • Licensure: Must hold a full, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory.
  • Residency: Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-approved residency program leading to board eligibility/certification in neurology.
  • Foreign Graduates: Must hold a valid ECFMG certification or equivalent proof of qualification.
