OpenAI is hiring a ChatGPT Performance Engineer to improve the performance, reliability, scalability, and efficiency of mission-critical systems supporting ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. The position is available remotely within the United States, with San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle also listed as locations.

This is a highly technical individual-contributor engineering role focused on identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks across application, middleware, runtime, and infrastructure layers.

You will analyze and optimize systems spanning networking, storage, application runtimes, Python, GPU utilization, and other parts of OpenAI’s technology stack. The goal is to improve latency, throughput, reliability, and cost efficiency as OpenAI’s products operate at increasingly large scale.

Responsibilities include developing performance tooling and metrics that provide deeper observability into system behavior, collaborating with infrastructure, platform, training, and product teams, and identifying opportunities for systemic performance improvements.

You will influence architecture and system-design decisions where performance, latency, throughput, and efficiency are important considerations. You will also lead investigations into significant production performance regressions and scalability problems.

The role includes developing performance-testing strategies and helping establish service-level objectives and agreements around latency and throughput for critical systems.

Candidates need 7+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong record of improving the performance or reliability of large-scale distributed systems.

Strong experience with performance profiling and tracing systems is expected. Candidates should have optimized at least one major layer of a production technology stack, potentially including databases, networking, storage, application runtimes, garbage collection, Python or Go internals, or GPU utilization.

A strong understanding of operating-system internals is also important, including scheduling, memory management, and I/O behavior.

Experience developing observability, benchmarking, or performance-oriented infrastructure at scale is relevant, together with demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguous technical problems and coordinate stakeholders around measurable performance objectives.

OpenAI currently lists compensation of $347,000–$445,000 USD, plus equity.
