Position Overview
The Utility Systems Repairer-Operator will serve as a skilled mechanic within the Building Management Division (BMD), performing a wide range of operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks. The position ensures the efficient operation of HVAC, steam, and boiler systems, as well as humidification systems and emergency equipment, maintaining high standards for special-purpose facilities and laboratories.
Duties & Impact
Operations & Maintenance
- Perform predictive and preventive maintenance on refrigeration, air-conditioning, heating, high-pressure steam distribution, humidification systems, and boilers.
- Conduct fire pump and emergency generator testing.
- Maintain continuous operation and monitoring of Central Control Room computers, analyzing data and alarms to take corrective actions.
- Ensure mechanical room interiors, air intakes, and equipment areas are clean and functional.
System Troubleshooting & Repair
- Diagnose and repair equipment malfunctions, including relocation or modification of systems to meet specific laboratory or facility requirements.
- Collaborate with engineering and testing personnel to plan and modify systems for optimal operation.
- Perform adjustments and repairs to ensure equipment efficiency and reliability.
Specialized Duties by Grade
- WG-8: Operates and repairs equipment under close supervision, performing basic maintenance tasks.
- WG-10/11: Performs a full range of maintenance and repair tasks with minimal supervision, including advanced troubleshooting, installation, and modifications for specialized systems.
Candidate Profile
Education Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred Qualifications
- WG-10/11 applicants must hold a current EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.
- Valid State or District of Columbia driver’s license required.
- Experience with HVAC systems, boiler operations, and steam distribution preferred.
Conditions of Employment
- Pass pre-employment background investigation.

- Physical requirements include lifting to 50 lbs., working in all weather conditions, climbing ladders, and standing or walking for extended periods.
- Must be available for shifts that may include holidays, weekends, and emergency call-backs.
