About Abbott and Lingo

Abbott, a global leader in healthcare innovation, continues to redefine how people manage and understand their health. Within Abbott, Lingo represents a next-generation continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system designed for adults who want to enhance their overall wellness and metabolic awareness. Lingo merges biosensor technology with powerful backend intelligence to help individuals make smarter lifestyle choices and live healthier, longer lives.

The Opportunity

Abbott is seeking a Principal Backend Engineer to take a pivotal role in designing, scaling, and optimizing the backend architecture of its Lingo platform. This high-performance digital health ecosystem processes millions of real-time biosensor readings daily. The role is ideal for an experienced engineer who thrives in cloud-native environments and enjoys shaping distributed systems that power connected health solutions at a global scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement scalable, cloud-native backend services supporting real-time glucose data ingestion and analytics.
  • Design high-performance APIs, event-driven microservices, and robust data pipelines.
  • Build multi-region services on Kubernetes, leveraging service mesh technologies for security, reliability, and observability.
  • Implement end-to-end data security, privacy-by-design principles, and compliance with health data regulations.
  • Ensure low-latency, high-availability performance through caching, resiliency design, and intelligent failover mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with SRE and DevOps teams on observability, incident management, and capacity planning.
  • Define and maintain API versioning, schema evolution, and data contract standards across engineering teams.
  • Partner with Mobile, Data/ML, and Platform teams to align backend capabilities with analytics, AI insights, and consumer product goals.
  • Mentor engineering peers, lead architecture discussions, and drive backend excellence through best practices.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Abbott seeks a backend leader who combines technical mastery with a visionary approach to large-scale system design. The ideal candidate demonstrates both depth in backend development and breadth in architectural strategy — capable of influencing cross-functional teams while keeping end users and product goals at the forefront.

Required Expertise

  • 8+ years of experience in backend or distributed systems engineering.
  • Proficiency in Java/Spring Boot or Kotlin, with expertise in both relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture, Kubernetes, and cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Expertise in API design (REST, event-driven) and streaming/messaging systems like Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Proven ability to deliver secure, resilient, and scalable systems in production environments.
  • Experience working in regulated or health-related contexts, ensuring compliance and data integrity.
  • Demonstrated leadership in mentoring teams, influencing architecture, and setting technical standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with GraphQL, gRPC, and consumer-driven schema registries.
  • Advanced performance tuning for Postgres, Cassandra, and distributed caches.
  • Experience with multi-region deployments, traffic shaping, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Knowledge of OpenTelemetry, tracing tools, and API gateway management.
  • Exposure to AI/ML-serving interfaces and real-time analytics pipelines.
