Reporting directly to the Director of the CfA, the Executive Director will be instrumental in shaping the strategic direction and ensuring the operational excellence of the STARS program. This pivotal role involves:

  • Visionary Leadership: Developing and executing key initiatives to expand the reach and impact of the STARS program.
  • Sustainable Funding: Securing diverse revenue streams through grants, donations, and partnerships to ensure the long-term viability of the program.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Fostering strong collaborations with state education departments, tribal leadership, local schools, scientists, and educators.
  • Operational Excellence: Overseeing the delivery of telescopes, hands-on STEM curricula, and professional development to schools, while optimizing systems for scalability and efficiency.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serving as the primary liaison for the STARS program, advocating for its mission and building strong relationships with funders, policymakers, and community leaders.

The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree and a proven track record of leadership, strategic planning, and fundraising, ideally within the education or STEM fields. Key qualifications include:

  • Exceptional leadership skills with a history of driving business performance through people.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting and financial analysis.
  • Expertise in data analysis, interpretation, and presentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of public education systems and rural community engagement.
  • Superior knowledge of STEM education initiatives, particularly in astronomy or physics.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing complex operations and driving organizational efficiency.

This is a Trust Indefinite (non-federal) position within the prestigious Smithsonian Institution, offering a competitive salary range of $165,901 – $195,200 per year and a comprehensive benefits package.
