About the Role
Nuclear Materials Couriers form part of a highly trained, armed protective force responsible for the secure transport of nuclear weapons, components, and weapons-grade materials. The role involves operating government-owned vehicles, including tractor-trailers, in accordance with strict safety and security protocols. Couriers must integrate expertise in security operations, emergency response, health and safety, and tactical law enforcement to safeguard sensitive materials against natural or artificial threats.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide armed security during the transportation of hazardous and classified materials.
- Conduct security planning and risk assessment before and during convoy missions.
- Collaborate with federal, state, and local law enforcement during operations or investigations.
- Respond rapidly and decisively to security breaches, environmental hazards, or emergencies.
- Uphold federal regulations concerning training and continued service commitments under DOE policy.
Training & Development
Selected candidates will undergo rigorous instruction at the Nuclear Materials Courier Training Academy in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Training covers firearms handling, tractor-trailer operation, tactical procedures, and federal law enforcement standards. Participants will reside in government facilities during training. Failure to meet academy performance standards will result in termination from the program.
Work Environment & Travel
This is a full-time, permanent position with the expectation to travel up to 75% of the time. Couriers operate on a 24/7 mission schedule, including emergency response duties. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed, and telework options are not available.
Eligibility Criteria
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Age Requirement: Must be under 38 years old unless eligible under veterans’ or covered service exceptions.
- Security Clearance: Must obtain and maintain a Q Access Authorization.
- Physical Fitness: Must meet semi-annual physical standards, including a 1-mile run in 8:30 minutes or less and a 40-yard sprint from prone position in 8 seconds or less.
- License: Must hold a valid state driver’s license and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) during training.
- Drug Testing: Pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing required.
- Firearm Qualification: Must carry and qualify with assigned weapons.
Qualifications
Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in law enforcement, security, or military operations involving the protection of life and property, prevention of theft or sabotage, and armed tactical duties.
Experience from military, Coast Guard, federal, or private armed security roles will be considered. Volunteer or unpaid work that demonstrates relevant competencies may also qualify.
Evaluation Process
Applications are reviewed in two stages:
- Minimum Qualification Review: The first two pages of each resume are assessed for eligibility.
- Category Rating Evaluation: Qualified applicants are rated based on relevant experience and competencies.
Cut-off dates occur every 30 days, starting November 8, 2025, and continuing until the announcement closes on October 30, 2026.

- A continued service agreement is required for extensive training periods.
- Applicants must pass medical and psychological evaluations and maintain certification under the Human Reliability Program.
