The Opportunity

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) plays a critical role in the Imaging Service by performing a wide range of diagnostic radiography examinations under the direction of physicians. This position directly supports radiologists and medical officers in producing accurate diagnostic images used to identify injuries, pathological conditions, foreign bodies, or lesions. The role contributes to the broader mission of the VA by ensuring timely, precise imaging that informs patient care decisions.

Day-to-Day Impact

In this role, success is defined by the ability to operate general diagnostic radiography equipment and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) efficiently. The DRT reviews the patient’s history and prior imaging, prepares and positions patients for examinations, sets technical parameters, and monitors the patient’s well-being throughout the procedure. They maintain communication with radiologists, ensure image quality, and provide immediate alerts if significant findings arise. The incumbent also assists in fluoroscopy procedures, processes digital images for PACS, and participates in evaluating and optimizing radiographic image management. Maintaining clean and organized imaging suites, as well as managing supplies, is also a key part of daily responsibilities.

  • Completion of a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program of at least 24 months, accredited by JRCERT or other DOE-recognized agency
  • Certification in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) is required for GS-6 and above.
  • Proficiency in English
  • Experience may qualify applicants for higher GS levels (GS-5 to GS-8) based on clinical competencies and demonstrated knowledge.
