Key Duties
The Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic will:
- Diagnose, repair, and overhaul heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including tracked carriers, artillery, cranes, bulldozers, forklifts, and transport trucks.
- Conduct maintenance and major repairs on internal combustion engines, transmissions, driveline systems, and hydraulic controls.
- Utilize specialized diagnostic tools such as engine analyzers, voltmeters, and computer-based systems to identify and resolve issues.
- Overhaul assemblies like voltage regulators, generators, and brake cylinders.
- Perform field maintenance and vehicle recovery as part of mobile repair teams.
- Guide and mentor lower-grade mechanics, providing technical advice and overseeing quality control.
- Inspect, test, and maintain vehicles before and during training exercises to ensure operational readiness.
- Assist in environmental compliance, safety practices, and maintenance documentation.
Qualifications and Experience
General Experience:
Applicants should demonstrate hands-on familiarity with maintenance tools, routine repair tasks, and preventive servicing techniques for mobile and combat equipment.
Specialized Experience:
- WG-08: Minimum 12 months of experience using tools and diagnostic devices for vehicle repair. Must understand basic electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
- WG-10: At least 18 months of experience diagnosing and overhauling complex vehicle systems, applying advanced troubleshooting techniques, and ensuring maintenance quality.
Essential Competencies:
- Strong understanding of vehicle system interrelationships.
- Proficiency in reading technical manuals, schematics, and engineering diagrams.
- Ability to analyze test results and determine appropriate repair actions.
- Skilled use of basic and advanced testing equipment.
- Capability to train junior mechanics and provide on-site repair support.

Military & Legal Requirements
- Must be a current or eligible member of the Alaska Army National Guard.
- Must hold or obtain a valid state and military driver’s license.
- U.S. citizenship and Secret security clearance required.
- Compliance with Selective Service registration (for males born after December 31, 1959).
- Subject to the Lautenberg Amendment (no qualifying domestic violence convictions).
- Must meet occupational health standards and may undergo periodic medical exams.
