New York Businesses See Rising AI Adoption, Navigating Shifting Employment Landscape

New York, NY – March 25, 2025 – A recent survey conducted by the Empire State Business Leaders Forum (ESBLF) reveals a significant surge in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption among New York businesses, alongside evolving perspectives on employment and workforce dynamics. The study, which polled over 200 business leaders across various sectors in early 2025, sheds light on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of work in the state.

While employment remains a key concern, the survey indicates a growing confidence in the availability of skilled workers. Notably, 68% of respondents believe their organizations possess the necessary talent to meet current and future staffing needs, marking a 12% increase from a similar survey conducted in 2023. However, this optimism is tempered by concerns regarding ongoing skills development and talent retention.

A significant finding is the rapid integration of AI into business operations. A striking 82% of New York businesses report utilizing AI across various functions, including customer service, data analysis, marketing automation, and administrative tasks. This widespread adoption raises critical questions about the impact on traditional roles and the need for workforce adaptation.

The rapid proliferation of AI is undeniably transforming the New York business landscape,” stated Dr. Eleanor Vance, Director of the ESBLF. While AI offers tremendous potential for efficiency and innovation, it also necessitates a proactive approach to workforce development and reskilling. Businesses must prioritize equipping their employees with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven environment. 

Despite the growing confidence in current skill levels, the survey highlights a concerning trend: only 40% of businesses actively participate in apprenticeship programs or provide comprehensive workplace training initiatives. Additionally, engagement with universities and colleges has declined, with 52% of respondents reporting limited or no collaboration with higher education institutions.

The disconnect between businesses and educational institutions is a cause for concern,” Dr. Vance emphasized. “Strengthening partnerships between industry and academia is crucial for ensuring a robust talent pipeline that meets the evolving demands of the New York economy. 

Beyond employment and AI, business leaders express growing concerns about cybersecurity and tax policies. Cybersecurity emerged as the second-highest concern, reflecting the increasing vulnerability of businesses to cyber threats in the digital age. Taxation also remains a significant issue, with 60% of respondents believing New York’s business tax rates are too high. Furthermore, 70% express similar concerns about income tax rates, and 45% are worried about the state’s tax divergence from federal policies.

Tax policies play a pivotal role in shaping the competitiveness of New York businesses,” Dr. Vance noted. Our survey results underscore the need for a balanced approach that fosters economic growth while ensuring fiscal responsibility.

The ESBLF survey, conducted from January 8 to February 16, 2025, provides valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of the New York business landscape. As AI continues to reshape industries and workforce needs, businesses must adapt proactively to ensure long-term success. The Forum urges stakeholders to prioritize skills development, strengthen industry-academia partnerships, and address concerns related to cybersecurity and taxation.
