About the Role:
Join our Machine Learning Infrastructure team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Thumbtack’s AI-driven platform. We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Machine Learning Infrastructure Engineer to lead the architectural vision and development of our next-generation ML infrastructure. This role involves designing and implementing scalable systems that support complex machine learning applications, including search, ranking, recommendations, pricing optimization, and generative AI initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Define and drive the technical architecture for Thumbtack’s machine learning platform.
- Lead cross-functional projects involving engineering, data science, and product teams.
- Architect and implement critical ML infrastructure components, including model serving and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems.
- Establish and enforce best practices for ML engineering across the organization.
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to engineering teams.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to align ML infrastructure with business objectives.
Qualifications:
- 8+ years of engineering experience, with a strong focus on distributed systems.
- 4+ years of hands-on experience building large-scale ML infrastructure or platforms.
- Proficiency in at least one major programming language (Go and Python preferred).
- Proven experience leading complex, cross-functional technical projects.
- Strong architectural skills in designing scalable and reliable distributed systems.
- Deep understanding of ML workflows, frameworks, and operational challenges.
- Experience mentoring teams and promoting engineering excellence.
- Demonstrated ability to make strategic technical decisions with broad organizational impact.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience building AI platforms that support numerous production models.
- Expertise with modern ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and MLOps tools.
- Experience implementing generative AI solutions at enterprise scale.
- Track record of building high-performing technical teams.
- Expertise with cloud-native architectures and major cloud providers (AWS, GCP).
- Experience driving technical strategy in fast-growing tech companies.
