GrowthX, a rapidly growing, seven-figure revenue AI-native startup, is seeking a talented and driven Founding Backend Engineer to build and scale the core infrastructure of our AI-powered growth platform. We’re revolutionizing how marketing teams leverage AI for content creation, distribution, and conversion, partnering with industry leaders like Reddit, Ramp, and HeyGen. As a Founding Backend Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing and developing the backbone of our internal workflows runtime and platform. This role focuses on the frameworks and APIs that empower the efficient development and execution of our AI-driven processes. We embrace AI tools like Cursor and Windsurf to maximize productivity and expect our team members to do the same. This is a fully remote position, requiring at least 4 hours of overlap with US Pacific Time during reasonable work hours.
Responsibilities:
- Design and build scalable backend systems and APIs using TypeScript, Ruby on Rails, or Python, supporting complex AI workflows and internal platforms. Relational database (PostgreSQL) experience is essential.
- Develop and maintain internal runtime systems and frameworks (currently using Temporal.io) to streamline the creation and execution of AI workflows.
- Optimize backend systems for performance and scalability to handle high loads and complex data pipelines.
- Create APIs that integrate with various resources, including Weaviate (for RAG), LLM providers, scrapers, and external service APIs.
- Deploy and maintain infrastructure to ensure the reliability and uptime of backend systems.
- Collaborate closely with product engineers and the services team to deliver cohesive solutions.
- Focus on delivering impactful solutions pragmatically, avoiding over-engineering.
- Contribute to the creation and maintenance of AI workflows used by our services team (a key aspect of “dogfooding” our platform).
Qualifications:
- Proven expertise in building and scaling backend systems using PostgreSQL, TypeScript, Ruby on Rails, or Python.
- Experience in developing internal platforms, frameworks, or runtimes.
- Expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining APIs.
- Proficiency in DevOps practices, including deploying, monitoring, and maintaining production systems.
- Strong understanding of performance optimization techniques for databases and backend services.
- A pragmatic problem-solving mindset, capable of navigating complex environments and making sound decisions about build vs. buy.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, essential for a remote work environment.
- Familiarity with building for LLMs, RAG, and related technologies is a significant advantage. A strong interest in deepening your knowledge of these areas is essential.
Compensation & Benefits:
